Diesel Fuel Additive

I just got my 2003 Excursion with a 7.3 Power Stroke last week. It's my first. I've read about the new low sulfer fuels and the problems with them not lubricating the engines. I bought some Rotrlla DFA. I just saw in the Ford manual that I shouldn't add anything to the fuel. They say it could do damage. What's should I do?

I've got 15+ years of owning and driving big rigs,
No Engine maufactures recomend additives be cause they just don't endorse them, but I have always use (LUCAS) upper cylinder lubracant (fuel additive) Seems to do well, i would mix it acording to instructions and run a tank full once a month, the last rig i got rid of was my own personal truck with 875,000 mls on the motor with no major engine repairs, so i cant prove it dosent work! I used MMO for a while, but have heard good and bad about it. It sounds like the LUCAS stuff has similar properties to MMO as its a top cylinder lubricant.

I've been using Stanadyne since I bought the truck, in virtually every tank of fuel. It keeps the injectors clean, and improves mileage enough to pay for itself.

Me too. Ford doesn't recommend using them, but they do say that if the fuel gels in the winter to use Standyne Performance Formula. That tells me that they think Standyne products are acceptable for use. I think they want to avoid making a blanket statement that fuel additives are OK because they are afraid what some people might put in the engine (i.e. gasoline, ATF, etc.). I also notice that my engine runs a lot quieter with additive.

I have been using Power Service fuel additive sience I have had my truck (2yrs) , and have not had any issues, except a smoother running motor , and better fuel milage.

Time to pucker up

I have put gasoline in the diesel tank, 5% to keep the fuel from jelling in the winter.

I seen drivers use gasoline outon the road in the winter time too, but be carefull with it , i've also seen them put to much and burn a hole in a piston and melt a injector tip on big rigs!! not good at $1100.00 a peice for injectors on detroit or cat! DW

That's very hard on a modern diesel. I can't understand why anyone would use something like that instead of the proper fuel additive. 1 $4.25 bottle of Standyne Performance formula treats 60 gallons of fuel. 5% of 60 gallons is 3 gallons of gas. 3 gallons of gas are more than $4.25 in most areas of the country.

Them old VW owners used gasoline in their tanks in the winter. Why do truck drivers talk to buggars? I had an employee use gasoline in the diesel tank, took out 2 pistons in about 15 minutes of operation after the gasoline was added. Also put the truck down for a week trying to get all them little parts out of the block. You do what you want, but my money goes on lucas, howe's or power service. They do test their product before marketing.
only my 2 cents
