I wanted to know the general reliability so far on these engines. I know the early ones had a few issues but it seems the newer ones are more or less, "fixed"? Anyways, my rear main seal failed on my 7.3 this weekend (don't ask me how the hell it happened, it just did. I may be the first person its ever happened to, idk) and I'm currently 400 miles from home averaging about 50 MPG of oil...
I do alot of cross country traveling (2-3 times a year), really need a good reliable diesel truck. I love my 7.3, it'll smoke a new 6.7 any day (and has, full deleted H&S tuned trucks) of the week but it's gotten so old that I just can't trust it for these long cross country trips anymore and I think it's time to make the old 7.3 a toy and nothing more. Thinking about monday once I get home (and go through another $150-200 of oil) about buying a nice used 14-15 king ranch.
These engines have been very reliable. I too drive a 7.3 daily, but use my 6.7 for heavy towing. This may not be what you want to hear, but the 6.7L will outperform the 7.3L in every way, but maybe longevity. I don't know anyone with a 6.7L with 400k on the clock yet. BUT, the emissions on the 6.7 could cause a few problems down the road. NOW, if the 6.7 is tuned and deleted, no worries there! These truck are truly fantastic. We all hear horror stories from all engines, very few here have had major failures. I've driven them all since the 7.3, and this by FAR is my favorite. Plus the refinements in the trucks are remarkable.
So, to mod your 7.3 to the capability which gives it approx 500hp and 1000 torque (which I'd think is what it has to be in order to out pull a 6.7) I would think that losing the rear main would not be a mystery.
I'm not an expert, so I am probably wrong. It just surprises me that you could out pull a tuned 6.7.
I think you would be very happy with a newer truck. The transmission alone will make you very satisfied. The 1 thing you may not like would be fuel mileage. Good luck.

No you are correct. He would need 497 hp and 1044 ft.lb. AT THE REAR WHEELS to keep up with a H&S tuned 6.7. Very impressive for a 7.3 ... that would have taken a lot of work and cash. What is done to your 7.3? (I assume everything )
You are driving a 500 hp / 1000 ft.lb 7.3 and you are worried about the reliability of the 6.7????????

The big thing with the old 7.3s (and mine being an OBS) is they are much, much lighter than any of the super duties and they are geared very well for getting out of the hole IF you lock up. If I do just a 10lbs boosted launch in 2wd I'll smoke tires until I let off
I also have $50k tied up in my 7.3... Like I said, it's a toy or hotrod if you will.
It's a pretty straight forward build. 19 degree HPOP, 66mm h2e, hypermax intercooler, 180CC/100% injectors, twin pump/twin feed fuel system and all the supporting mods. Throw in some special tunes I had tonywildman write it's right around the high 400-very low 500s depending on the dyno.
But again, I just want to make my 7.3 a dedicated drag truck/summer weekend vehicle.
I don't think you have anything to worry about.
'15's got bigger better turbos and more power, something to keep in mind.
I replaced a 2000 7.3 6spd and have not regretted it. Unloaded and/or light loads I've been 2-3mpg better, particularly around town. Towing the fiver on the highway it's a draw.
Ended up picking this up today. I talked them down a littlebit and got an, "Okay", deal. I'm happy with it. Handles great, rides super smooth. Not as, "fun" to drive as the hotrod 7.3 but I think it'll make a good daily and be more reliable than the 7.3 with all it's, "little" issues

Sharp looking truck! Reps sent.
We will need a few more pics however.......
It was dark by the time I walked out of the dealership. I bitched and moaned with the sales guy and his manager for an hour over the price. Every dealership I go to they will not move on the prices of these trucks.
Don't fret over it too much if you got pretty much the truck you want. If you are like me and plan on keeping it for many years then the extra cost is nothing compared to the satisfaction of having something you want.
