Yeah, one...
In my 20 years of working on internal combustion engines, I've used Castrol for everything I could. Never had an oil-related problem. It always stayed "non-black" far longer than any other dino oil I've seen...
Thanks for the input krewat. I've been using Castrol for years in my other vehicles with no problems. I just wanted to make sure that there were no problems running it in the V10 (my first Ford). Any comments about their synthetics / blends or "4X4" oils? The oil for 4X4's is 15W-40 (too thick???)

My personal opinion: I would not run thicker oil for any reason - unless the engine is excessively worn. Blends for 4x4's are made for extreme off-roading and do work for the applications for which they are formulated. I pull anywhere from 8000 to 13000 lbs depending on the job. I do this on weekends mostly so no heavy hauling all the time. I see no oil breakdown in my engine oil whatsoever and it is always clean until its time to change it. I have tried the heavy oils (dino and synthetic). I have noticed that with Mobil 1 the engine will use a quart in 2000 miles. Also with the 10W30 dino my engine will use a quart in -+ 2000 miles. With the Castrol 5W30 it never uses oil - none.

15w-40 is WAY too thick. I use 5w30 Castrol in my V10, and on the first oil change (500 miles), I noticed it was MUCH quieter than with the Ford 5w20. Sounded like timing chain noise.
I have no info on synthetics, the only thing I've ever used is Castrol Syntec in my '96 T-bird 4.6L once and never again. It started weeping out the valve cover and other gaskets...
I've noticed a lot of people complain of oil usage. With Castrol 5w30, I have had NO oil usage even when really beating it. See Big Orn's posting above mine.

ak
If I remember correctly 5W-30 was Ford's original recommendation, which changed in 99 or 2000 to 5W-20. I have been using Mobil 1 Super Syn 5W-20 ever since I saw that it was Ford's preferred viscosity from another poster here. I have never had a weeping problem, nor have I had a usage problem with the synthetics, although I do have what other people suggest is piston slap, although I would never admit to it since it sure doesn't sound like piston slap. But I have noticed no increase, or decrease for that matter in noise or temperature going from 5W-30 to the thinner, yet supposedly better cooling 5W-20. But I see you have noticed a difference in timing chain noise, now I will have to check, because now you've made me think about it, and HATE it when that happens (when I have to think about something, not that I'm ****-retentive or anything, much).
I really hoped to be able to run M1 in my truck, but after it began to use the oil I stopped using it. It made the cold-start clatter disappear, it seemed to idle smoother and was cleaner than the Castrol at 3000 miles (not that Castrol was black or dirty, it was just not as clean). M1 is a great oil and I would recommend it. I have used it for years on my other trucks and even in my Honda generator.
So many different opinions on oil usage here, I cant get away from adding mine. I believe that the lower vis oil reccommended from factory is to lesson the effects from friction during start up, but may not protect after warm up and during extreme operating cond. Synthetic oils are basically designed to prolong oil life but does nothing for contamination. I just took delivery on my first Ford 2004 F-250 FX4 V-10 and Think I will run Mobil 5-30 with K-N oil filter. I will let you guys know if there are any issues with leaking, piston slap, smoking,or noise. I live in Tampa Fl where low temps are not a problem. Feedback is appriciated! (Former die hard Cheverlot owner) Yeah iam jumping fences these days!
Just change it! Really does not matter what you run if you keep it clean!
It kills me how many oil threads every site gets. When I was young we had oil! No special oil for this or that and you know I never in my life had and oil related failure. Now they make oil if you truck has 1 mile a different if it has 20 miles and yet another if it has big rear tires and never has any oil company explained what the difference is.
daimon1054, you sound just like my dad. He has always told me just to keep clean oil in a vehicle and it would be fine. You guys probably went to school together; you know, the one that you had to walk to, uphill, in the snow, both ways.
Seriously thought, I appreciate the input. This is my first Ford, and my first truck without a carb on it. I just don't want to mess anything up. Never had EFI either, but I'll start a new thread for that topic.
I have run 5W30 for the past 111,000k miles with no problems.
But I do nitice that I am loseing a little over 1 qt. between oil changes(3k).I have NO leaks and I have not seen any smoke??
same as twinbulls here...... 95,000 miles and run 5w30. I loose about a quart between changes but other than that no problems. I had a 30 second knocking sound when starting up in the winter but 5w30 seemed to fix it...... maybe becuase its summer now?
