99 Explorer 4.0L XLT starting problems

After the car sit for a long period of time it wont start on crank, I have to give some gas and the it starts fine. I Replaced plugs and air filter recently. Though I tried to just turn the key on without starting for few seconds and then start it and it worked. It seems that the fuel is not staying in place or the pressure is dropping while it rest for long period of time. But it does not happend overnight. The car is in a good shape. Anybody have any idea what is the cause for this kind of problem?

You stated a long period of time. What do you consider long? Nothing will hold forever, so if you are talking 3-4 days, this is probably normal to lose pressure. If you are talking 5min to 1 hour, then you MAY have a problem.
There are 2 possibilities to check. 1. Most likely is Fuel pressure regulator is leaking down when it sets for a period of time. 2. Check valve in fuel pump is bad.
Pressure regulator leakage is fairly easy to detect. Disconnect fuel return line from regulator to tank at frame rail junction point. Insert end of hose in a clear container and turn key on to run the pump to pressure up the system. Turn key off and check for fuel dripping out of return hose. You will get some during initial pump up, but it should stop when excess pressure is vented past regulator. If it continues to drip, the regulator valve is leaking and should be replaced. If you get no leakage at the return hose, suspect a leaking pump check valve or remotely possible leaking injector. You can also put a pressure gague on fuel rail to monitor the pressure in the system during the leak down test.

Long period is about 4-8 hours outdoors.

Any advice how to access the fuel regulator in this massive complex engine?

Thanks for the advice.

Yesterday I have tried to start the car after it being outside for about 6 hours. It did not start by cranking. I had to press the gas peddale in order to keep it running. I disconected the battery for few minutes and I tryed again and it started normaly by cranking only. Now I have the check engine lit up steady. I guess somthing in the PCM is bad. I will take it to the dealer for further checkup on this and i will update this issue.

I took it to the dealer, fortunatly the problems happend to the dealer too. They found two things.
1. IAC was bad.
2. Fuel system not cleaned.

Took care of it and it seems that it works fine for now.

estimated cost was:

IAC with O rings replacement about $270.00
Fuel System Cleand up, replacing fuel line2 - $250.00
