well, since FTE does not have a 98 powerstroke section,
im gonna put it here, since im pretty familiar with em'
My E350 is due for some changes, i feel the front end and its got some slop i dont like.
so before i rebuild something that i dont really want , i may as well spend the extra cash and do a 4wd conversion.
i know that the 05+ axles are a pretty easy swap, with (what i call) minor modifications to the radius arms
most likely ill delete the stock arms and fab up something better and stronger.
my questions on this swap are:
when i purchase the front end, should i grab the steering box and pitman arm also?
also have 2 ways of going about transfercases.
i have a late 70's gear driven divorced NP205
or i have a ZF5 and transfer out of a 97 F250
i cannot decide which way to go.
if i do the manual swap, it will be alot more work
if i run the divorced set up, ill be spending some coin on the driveshafts.
either way, should the front end shaft be equipped with a cardigan?
thanks for any insight.
im no stranger to custom vehicles.
i have a few of em!
To figure out what section you are better off in, is your trans an E4OD or a 4R100...
The engine electronics are a little different between the obs and superduty.
If you have E4OD, then you shoukd be in 94-97 obs section, and if you have 4r100, then you're in correct section.
Now, on to questions.
Being that you're making a van, 4x4, I don't think the steering boxes are the same. There are plenty of kits to make vans 4x4, so I suggest buying a few van specific parts from them if you're going to do all the work yourself.
No matter what route you go, you'll need to get driveshafts made. Cost difference is negligible. I think a couple guys have swapped manuals in their vans, search this and the older psd forum.
I don't have the link off hand, but a guy just finished making an F450/F550 4x4 van. It's awesome. I suggest looking for that write up also.
Did they offer a van with the ZF? I know you have to modify the floor pan on a super duty to go from a 4R100 to a ZF-6. The van throws a whole new wrench into this discussion since the engine cover comes into play.
I don't think the van ever had a manual trans.
But people have done it.
Probably need a body lift or a lot of cutting. Zf6 is like 3-4" taller than a 4r100
