Need Power Assist help please

Greetings, I am a new member here with a 1973 f250 highboy, 360, NP435/205. I have been struggling with the woes of the power assist steering system. I made new seals and got it more or less leak free, but now I am having an odd problem. The assist only assists when turning to the right. It is DEAD when turning to the left. No assist whatsoever. It worked fine when I took it apart.

The only thought I have is that the oil change place I took the truck to over greased the ball stud zirk and caused a hydraulic lock to occur, preventing correct operation. If this is the case, what is the best solution? If it is not, what are your thoughts? Thank you in advance, all.

You probably have air in the system. Use the advanced search feature, search "Garrison" and also "Bendix", and read up on them. As I'm sure you know, the two power-assist systems are different parts-wise, but I think troubleshooting on them would be similar.

Thank you for the reply, David. I have the bendix valve in my truck. Turns out it was the adjustment nut, it was not tightened down all the way before I backed it off a quarter turn. I readjusted it and it works perfectly! Sixth time is the charm, I suppose!

The adjustment nut is located on the steering gear box, it only sets the preload for the sector shaft, but...

With Power Assist P/S, the manual steering gearbox is used because...it has nothing to do with Power Assist P/S!

Jeez Louise...Your 1973 F250 4WD does NOT have Bendix Power Assist P/S!

GARRISON Power Assist P/S: 1973 F250 4WD; 1974 F250 4WD before serial number T80,001.

BENDIX Power Assist P/S: 1974 F250 4WD from serial number T80,001; 1975/76 F250 4WD; 1977 F250 4WD before serial number Y20,001.

Garrison P/S parts are not the same as Bendix P/S parts.

My truck is quite a mutt, and it does indeed have the Bendix valve. The adjusting nut in question is the one that threads on to the spool bolt. Here is the rebuild schematic I used.

Glad you got it figured out. Your truck might be a mutt, but it works!

Thanks, David! About every bit of it is mismatched, but it has treated me well since its rescue and is getting a little better every day.
