Hi all, I have a 1998 Lincoln Navigator. Can anyone let me know if it is normal for the fan to start as soon as I start it up from cold. Have only had the vehicle for a few weeks and it has done this since I've had it, not sure if it is right or not. Any thoughts would be appreciated.
Unless a previous owner replaced the engine cooling fan with an electric one yours probably came with a thermal clutch fan.
A thermal clutch fan will always spin at a slower speed until the temperature rises enough to cause the thermal clutch to engage and spin the fan faster.
The clutch normally will slip at higher RPM.
An engine doesn't need a fan above 35 mph.
A fan spinning at full speed when the car is moving faster can impede the air flow thru a radiator and wastes power.
I would say that it looks like the original fan with clutch. Part of the reason for posting was it seems to take a long time to warm up, and when I've had the OBD-11 plugged in at normal running temperature it is showing up at 55 degrees Celsius (aprox 131 degrees Fahrenheit) and that is as hot as it gets. Have tested the thermostat and is working fine, also the gauge in the car at normal running temperature always stays above the C but below the first mark on the gauge.
