Looking good! The tedious part is the wiring. Try and use disconnect able wiring. It will make it a lot easier to repair gauges if needed in the future. It feels good when progress is being made.

My VDO speedometer quit working and it took me a while to determine the cause. Turns out both the hall-effect sensor and the gauge went bad. I picked up a new insert while at Mid Fifty’s and thought a six gauge setup would look good. I failed to notice that I would have to trim the dash.

So after two weeks work, I finally got everything working. I kept the old VDO gauges but bought a new Auto Meter speedometer and tach.

Has a clean and vintage performance look. I like it. Don. My VDO speedo died too 56panelford. Also have a Euro look I'm not in love with.

I used Dolphin gauges in my panel, completely smoothed out the dash. I'm happy with the way it looks but if I ever need to change out a gauge it's going to be a real pain in the ***.

We do tend to fight mightily to take a very simple truck and make them much harder and more expensive to repair. Maybe it's just me, but I don't think so.

56PanelFord: Excellent work on smoothing out the dash; very clean look. However, I would add your back, neck, and a few other body parts that will experience pain should a gauge goes bad.

Working in a poorly lit and difficult to see environment can try one’s patience. I bought an LED head lamp to allow improved vision but it was tough sledding even with a removable dash insert. They say a hobby is a labor of love. I wasn’t feeling the love.

Me too. We are saving a fortune modding these trucks ourselves. A couple more projects and I should have saved enough to retire comfortably. I'll let you know how that works out. )

I'll be purchasing a removable insert for the gauges for the pickup I'm working on now just to make it a little bit easier.

If you can't find Fuzzy Dice I guess a Fuzzy Vacuum attachment is just as good, Just kidding. Don, the gauge assembly looks great by the way.

Don, I have a question on that tall, tall shifter. Also on the shorter (but still tall) Lokar pieces. It seems to me that just a good bump in the road could cause it to shift out of gear, from the weight of the shifter wagging around? Are the detents that robust that it isn't a problem?

I can answer that, as I have the same shifter in mine. The detents are very stout, and the lockout from the push button shift **** works great.
