Brown Coolent

ok yesterday i was going some where and i notice there some steam coming out the passenger side area. I let it cool off i open the cap and its only maby an inch and a half from the top and it was dripping coolent were the drain plug is. At this time it was still green but some brown in it, I have a bottle of water and i put some water in to the top put the cap on started it up and drove back home. now the temp gauge stayed in noromal while it was steaming and while i was going home but the steam had that hot oil smell in it.

Well 2 hours later i go out side to check the truck and i see some coolent under drain plug, Well i open the cape and its all brown no green what so ever. now about 3 weeks ageo we changed the coolent and put a block sealer in it. Is my oil draining in it? now i know i have head problems because in january i had coolent get into the oil.

First collent get into oil then lifter are start to go then bearings are going and now this. what a POS truck and with only 82,000 miles

If you have an automatic it could be the transmission cooler tank leaking into the radiator. If you had anti-freeze in your oil a while back then you must have a problem, blown head gasket, cracked block, cracked head and it is probably oil in the system. You didn't say what engine you have or manual/automatic. If it is the 88 ranger you must have a 4 or 6 cylinder. It is a common problems with those engines. Water in the oil will harm the engine pretty fast. 82K miles isn't very much on an 88, the vehicle may have sat for a long time. Most vehicles need to be driven to keep the fluids moving, seals lubricated and all systems in good working order.

its an 88 xlt 2.9L auto, and i drove it everday in the winter and 1 day it got very hot on me (it was below 0 that day), and i check the coolent and it was 1/2 gallon low i looked in the oil and it was full of coolent , I think its a cracked head cause it not smoking like a blown head Gasket would be.

I did drive this truck everyday in the winter when this all started so i don't think its from sitting and in the summer i drive the car but i still drive the truck when i need it. I know my bearings have had it thats why i'm running 20W 50 and my lifters are crap also.

Not quite on topic but I had a Ranger back in the early 90s and loved it. My father was dying of cancer and needed me to do some errands that involved driving from Miami up to Franklin, NC about once a month. He handed me a brown paper bag with $10,000 in it and told me to go get a pick up truck. I bought a Ranger and put over 150,000 miles on it before I sold it. It drove like a champ and was still as tight as new when I sold it. They are great, robust little trucks but mine was just too small inside and out for my tastes. I got a job in Miami and found myself driving a very dangerous road (Krome avenue) every day to work so I wanted the larger truck and more room that an F150 afforded. I am surprised that your truck is giving you fits with so few miles on it. Makes one wonder if perhaps the odometer has been buggered with.
