A while back my compressor went bad (not locked up)just not cooling. About 5 min. before that happened, it started making a loud tapping noise (like valve tap). The system is still pressurized with R-12.I just bought a new compressor, expansion valve and evaporator as suggested by discount auto parts.I am also going to change my hose assembly because of a few puffed out places on the lines that look like they could blow at any time. What im asking is, does anyone think I need to do some extra things to assure myself that this fix job will be a success. Thanks William in Florida P.S I went back quite a ways in forum topics and couldnt find anything definite. 89' Ford F-150 4.9 2WD
If the evaporator isnt leaking I would get my money back on that. Also I dont recall an 89 having an expansion valve. I believe it has a fixed orifice. What you need to do is have the freon recovered. Flush out any lines you are keeping and condenser and the evaporator. Replace the compressor, add appropriate amount of oil in it per instructions, orifice tube, cycling switch and the accumulator. If the clutch is old and worn I would replace that as well if it didnt come with the compressor. Replace all the orings at the fittings. Evac and Recharge. The system flush is as important as all other things you do to it.
