Squealing noise when accelerating

Back again.. I just replaced the HPOP and IPR valve on my truck a few weeks ago. While the turbo was out I cleaned it and applied a small amount of anti seize on the unison ring. When installing the turbo I had moved the y-pipe a little to get the turbo in place. About a week after it was running again I started to get a squealing noise under acceleration. The noise isn't a whistle like the turbo but an actual squeal. Its a little bit louder than the turbo whistle. If I am in park and rev the engine it doesn't happen. It only happens when I accelerate and seems to be when there is boost. If I let off the gas pedal the noise stops. I don't have an issue with making boost. I did replace the turbo boot when it was apart a few weeks ago so I don't think that is the problem I checked the y-pipe clamp and down-pipe clamp and both are fine. I replaced the serpentine belt this past weekend and checked all pulleys, they were all very good with no play. Another thing, the pitch of the noise seems to change with rpm's too. Any other ideas what could be causing this type of noise? Thank you in advance!

When you moved the "Y" pipe did you loosen the
bolts on the up pipes? If not I would say start to look
for soot tracks. Take a small stick and place a short
string on the end. You then take that and move it around
the back of the pipes. The stick and strain are so you can
avoid getting your finders burned. Also check around the
clamps to make sure that they are seated and the flanges
have a full metal to metal seal.

Maybe Josh will drop in and say something or give better things to look for.

Thank you for your reply! This morning when I started the truck I turned the high idle on and the noise started so I popped the hood and quickly jumped on the motor to listen. It is definitely coming from around the turbo. I will recheck all the clamps and try your suggestion with a stick and string.. I would have never thought of that! Thank you! When I moved the y-pipe it was after the manifold bolts were already tightened. I learned on the next removal of the turbo you don't need to mess with the y-pipe at all. lol Thanks again!

I checked the flex joints on the y-pipe and they are clean, no soot at all. I did notice a small amount of soot at the top of the turbo outlet by the band clamp. So I took the band clamp off and this is what I noticed:

The bottom of the up-pipe isn't fitting right on the lower part of the turbo outlet. I tried to adjust it myself then tightened it back up, the noise was worse, it squeaks when I let off the gas now...lol I'll have help this weekend so until then it will squeak.

You don't want to use the marmon clamp to pull it in.
You will just distort the clamp.

This way sucks but will get it all aligned but when done it will be right,
I will post a PDF for the 2006 engine but I will also post the 04 torque info and exhaust system.
Use the assembly sequence in the 06 data and the torque in the 04
Then in 303-04D look for the installation instructions after you take a quick look
at what you need to loosen to remove the turbo.

The basics or it is to start at the turbo and end with the two up pipes last.
Just don't use the clamps for pulling. Get good contact around the clamp and
then torque it down.

Thank you very much for this info!!! I appreciate your help very much! I have a friend coming over this weekend to help so it should go smoothly... haha.. I hope. I was holding it in place perfect with 2 hands I just needed the second set of hands to install and tighten the clamp. I'm just glad the y-pipe is not leaking!! Thanks again!!

I removed both clamps this weekend on the turbo then loosened the downpipe at the CAT. I got a really good connection on both pipes with no gaps then tightened both clamps up then the downpipe connection at the CAT. Took it for a drive and everything was good for about 10 minutes then the squeal came back. I had torqued both nuts on the clamps to the correct spec of 89 ft-lbs. When I got home I checked the nuts on the clamps and both were a bit loose. I figured those clamps are toast and have ordered new ones and they should be here tomorrow. I have attached a 15 second video I took this morning so you guys can hear the noise. It appears when the high idle is turned on. When the truck warms up the squeal sound isn't very loud.

If you torqued to 89 Ft/Lb that clamp it done for.
You need to torque to 89 In/Lb Or just make it 10 Nm .

Had me worried. I was thinking "How the hell did he get that bolt to hold at
that torque.

When you say Cat don't you mean exhaust manifold?
The two up pipes come from the manifold on each side and then
the one big one that goes down from the turbo is the Down pipe.

I take that once the bolts were loose you found it less of a problem
to move the pipes into place.

I only loosened the down pipe to adjust it. When I removed the clamp on the ypipe at the turbo I saw the connection was a perfect fit but the clamp nut was loose. I hope the 2 new clamps will fix the noise.. lol. I'll keep you posted. Thanks for the replys!!

He's talking about the down pipe guys. If you look at the pic it isn't the y pipe.

Try and have someone shake the tailpipe while the clamp is being tightened and just about to seat. Need to also make sure the turbo is rested on the pedestal correctly. Which it prob is if it isn't leaking on the y pipe side.

Well I replaced both clamps. Both the ypipe and the downpipe had perfect fits. Started it up and the noise was there... said a few choice words and then as I was looking to the left of the turbo I remembered the little clamp on the end of the EGR cooler that connects to the up pipe. When I replaced the hpop I had to loosen that clamp and move it to get that last bolt on the hpop cover. Guess what!! I managed to get a socket on that clamp and the nut was loose; tightened it up and no more noise!! Said a few more choice words... haha. Well I figure I will have to replace that one also since I'm sure it will loosen up again. Any suggestions on replacing that one without removing the turbo? Thank you guys for all your help again!! Happy Thanksgiving!!
