My vote is that he wants to smoke them from the inside so it wont rub off....
1) Find some jackwagon neighbor with an overfueled Cummings who "likes to roll coal".
2) Remove taillamp assembly and place bulb opening just aft of tailpipe of jackwagon neighbor's truck.
3) Start Cummings and roll coal until desired smoke darkening level inside taillamp assembly is reached.
4) Re-install taillamp assembly.

And here I thought I was the only one that used the term "jackwagon"
My bet: he is trying to put an LED board in there. That's what I did with mine except I took the lazy way and cut the back of the housing out. My stock housings are junk anyway... I just wanted to see how it would look.
I'm running Aaron brand red 3157-plug LEDs from Amazon in both our PSDs. At least double the light output of stock tungsten 3157s, and no mods involving heating plastic in the same oven you use to cook food.....
Took the boards out, removed the white LED's for the license plate, and mounted the LED boards inside the truck housings.
One of them is failing now (half of the LED's have a fast flicker when lit at full brightness) so I'll probably make my own boards and install them into the new housing I have waiting for that purpose.
Who ever guessed doing a custom Led conversion was right!! sucks that the aftermarket still hasn't answered the demand for LED tail lights for the OBD fords.... Think I'm just going to wind up dremeling it out and using a piece of black plastic I find lying around as new backing board Ill mount the LEDs too. Thanks for the help, be sure to look out for the built thread!
