I'm looking for feedback on my thoughts and negotiating. Tonight I'm going to look at a 15 lariat with everything I want. The dealer has it knocked down 9698 with rebates. I have my truck to trade so I need to see what they offer on that but here are my thoughts. All the rebates they offer they get the funds back from Ford. So I buy the car they are effectively getting full msrp on the sale. So my question is am I out of line saying there is still negotiating room because essentially the dealer has wiggle room between msrp and the dealer cost. Plus they still have hold back. I was able to research and it looks like $5k is the difference between msrp and their cost. So in theory if I ask for another $4k off they still clear $1k plus hold back.
Right? Wrong? out of line? Thanks for the feedback.
There's always more negotiating, just depends on how far / long you are willing to go. I always go to the dealer with numbers in mind. What I believe the vehicle is worth and what I need for my trade in, if I'm trading in. I do some research on finding what the vehicle I'm interested in is worth / selling for and go from there. In all my purchases, as long as we're in the ballpark of what I believe is a good deal, then I go for it. If not, I walk away, knowing its not gonna happen, at least not today. What's a good deal is dependent on you, the buyer. Hopefully you've done your homework and have some numbers to rely on.
I suspect that the $9698 includes quite a bit of discounts, probably all of them realistically available. It's probably also based on "high MSRP". There really are not too many rebates on the Lariats right now making the XLT and XL a much better "deal". That being said, your general understanding is correct. Depending on the options the $5k can be accurate for profit above invoice. Most dealerships use holdback for profit, prep of vehicle, additional fuel (if you get a full tank), etc. Holdback can be a significant amount as well on these more expensive trucks. Honestly, my guess is you're already getting a below invoice offer by a good amount, and it may not be including destination, prep, or high doc fees, or be dependent on additional rebates you may not qualify for.
Oh, to clarify, the Friends and Neighbors is NOT a rebate. Ford gives us a few hundred bucks for any vehicle we sell under the F&N figure, but they do NOT give us back the full difference. So, to be clear, you will not be getting another $4k off. F&N is like X plan without a pin needed. We make a fair amount and the customer gets a good deal.
Do you know the breakout of the discount they quoted you? In my area, Lariats only have a $2500 rebate (last time I checked), so with $9700 off I would think they are dipping into holdback. Also, is that amount off the final MSRP or does it include the package rebates? Anyway, hard to tell with out the break down of package discounts, Ford rebates, and dealer discount.
Thanks for the info guys. But I just realized this might not happen..my wife..of all people reminded me that my truck is deleted and they might not take it on trade! Sonfoa! I'll just be upfront with them and see what happens.
Rebates are under $2500 here unless you qualify for other stuff ($1500 and $750 more if you take the high FMC rate option). Many people holding out for the Nov rebates found themselves worse off, even if only by a few hundred bucks.
What do you mean it's deleted? EGR delete? We take stuff modified in, we just don't resell it so it gets a wholesale price. There are plenty of dirt lots around here that buy that stuff up and sell though, so there is a market and trade value for em.
If you deleted your diesel, I would put the parts back on the truck before I traded it, if you still have them. If not you are looking at wholesale for your trade. Might be better off selling it yourself, unless you are in a state where you get tax credit from your trade.
Drove it liked it. Yes it's right about 20% maybe a little better. They offered me 25 on my 2011 xlt cc sb with 73k miles. They drove it all around and didn't question exhaust. Told them I wanted to sleep on it and they would call me tomorrow. So we shall see. Thanks for the heads up Frantz. You set realistic expectations for me that were right on. In fact their first sentence was that I was basically getting xplan. So I'm glad I didn't go in there insulting them. Really like the car...really hate the trade in/buying process!

They are offering you 25k for your 2011 XLT and almost $10k off a 2015 Lariat - I would say you are doing pretty good with the trade in/buying process!
It's hard to insult us. There are so many misconceptions about the process that it can be a painful experience (for our side too). MOST customers just want a good deal and to be treated right. Some demand we lose money, and I generally let someone else have their business. I hate the games more than any of my customers do, I promise you that!
Yes agreed. The only thing they made me upset about was the first thing they said when we sat down was they had to add back freight. But the were working from the msrp on the window sticker that already had the freight added into the msrp. If they took the msrp and subtracted it and then added it back I'd be fine. But when I reviewed everything when I got home the freight was blatantly on the window sticker and they weren't adjusting for that.
So of course I asked for a little more off and we both said lets sleep on it. I also listed my truck on cl and a whole sale guy called me so I may get more out of my truck and won't have to worry about the delete issue with the exhaust.
Thanks again for your input guys. Hopefully this all gets done. I'm excited.
The freight is another of my soap box rant warnings. You can't blame the dealership though. Its a state by state thing. Yes, it is on the window sticker, but many states allow the purchase price of the vehicle to be independent of the freight, giving an instant $1200 advantage over a dealership like mine in PA. I don't blame the dealer though because if every guy down the street is doing the same thing, anyone in that area will come to expect it. It's just one of those things that probably didn't come up as much until now that most folks look online for pricing. It gives a false impression that "all the good deals are down near Washington" for many online shoppers here in south central PA. When they get there, they're already invested and realize its the same deal as home, but might as well just get it over with.

That is a good trade in amount. Around here they weren't willing to go above the high teens for my 2012. It kind of sucks because the taxable amount is the difference between purchase price and trade in so they can low ball the trade in and they know some if not most will go for it.
