Distributer Install Question on 1946 2 Ton

I recently removed my distributer on a 1946 2 ton V-8 due to a failure of the electronic ignition system I had installed this summer.

I am in the process on installing "new" original equipment points. Sadly, the engine has been turned over numerous times and I need to figure out how to get it back in proper time.

I am attaching a couple photos. One is the back of the distributer and the other is the front of the engine.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

I would think same as any engine, get the #1 piston to top dead center on compression stroke, install distributor with rotor pointing to the terminal that corresponds to the #1 cylinder.

Doesn't the distributor only go in one way?

What he said, and keep in mind the slot on the front of the camshaft that drives the distributor is slightly offset so it can only go on one way. If it isn't seated against the cover, tightening the cap screws can break an ear off the distributor.

Thanks,

Due to the distributer being on the front of the engine it got me to thinking. I knew about TDC, but just wanted to make sure.

I did not know about the offset. That is very useful information.

Thanks again!
