I got my 2 NOS pistons last week from Bob Selzam. Totally dipped in cosmoline and paper, just like the old military jeeps and harleys for 150.00 in the back of the comic books. Ford 01T, .060 over. I had to beat a couple out of the 59 ab block I'm working on so needed a couple of replacements. Finally tonight I had some time to heat one of them on top of the wood stove. I placed it in a tin can and after about 10 minutes I just lifted the curled piece of paper off the piston. Then I juggled the hot pistons in my hands with some paper towels and it was almost completely clean. Then I took it still hot down to the shop and dropped it in a can of laquer thinner, which completed the task. Nice to know one can still get a couple of identical pistons for 20 bucks each and keeping things in balance. I will get a picture all cleaned up next time I have my camera out. It's easy to find small jobs to do with the engine and grille bar repair etc. The big project, the woody, requires larger blocks of time and with my regular work so busy and bad weather, the small stuff seems easier to get to. Not sayin' I haven't been sneaking some time in on that too though.
about 20 years ago i ended up with 25 ford valve Gasket kits still wraped in Cosmoline, there were 5 packs each pack having 5 valve gasket sets all cosmoed together, the part # on the boxes is 1GA-18387, 16 pieces in each pack, talk about a mess taking them out, i still have all of them to.
great to hear Bob selzam is still at it, i need to buy something from him & say hi, i hope this post didnt start out sounding like a hijack it wasen't intended to be. think it was the Cosmoline parts thing that got me typing,
just took a "2 1/2 hour pause" i went out into the garage to get the part number off the box and triped over a box of stainless steel trim pieces, lost my balance and in the fall my elbow slammed into the work bench, my wife took me to the emergency room and i got 7 stitches in my right elbow. why did i have to check that # tonight well here i am finishing this post.
No need to feel stupid. Sometimes we just need to go down and check something. A few years back, before I got remarried and all the kids had moved out so it was just me out here up on the side of a mountain, I couldn't sleep so at 1 am I decided to go down to the shop and measure something I had been working on. Well it was a rare night that was 10 degrees out, the slope to the shop covered with a sheet of ice. I in my bathrobe and both feet went out from under me at the same time. I was literally flat out but up in the air. When I landed my head slammed into the ice and I became unconcious. When I awoke I felt like I was paralyzed as I couldn't seem to move. Fortunately it all started coming back to me, but I was so lucky I woke up when I did. There's no way anyone could have ever heard me if I had been seriously hurt. All this because I was wondering if a piece of channel I had would be long enough to support part of a truck floor. But..... I totally know how you must have felt. After all hurting yourself because of a hobby just seems worse that hurting yourself in the line of duty at work. Now go sit on the couch and put your feet up. No truck work til you get those stitches out. Ya hear?
I hear ya GB on taking it easy. my wife has been mother hen'ing me with the same message we went to the home depot yesterday afternoon for water softener salt and it started in there, "here let me lift that you know what the doctor said" oh well have a happy turkey day, and if you need any of those gasket sets i can trade you some for the bent tonner hub caps we talked about, Jess
