Lightbulb Advice and help needed- 460 buildup.

Bigsnag, GeorgeDavila, Bill Beyer and everybody- please
lend me your wisdom- I would really appreciate!

What I've got:

a 1977 F-250 Ranger XLT 4WD lowboy Regular cab 8'
bed Styleside- 400M V-8 (dead- threw a rod and
busted the block) PS/PB no air- heater & AM
radiddio.

The donor (victim ) engine: A 460 V-8 from a 1973
Lincoln Continental Town Coupe (land aircraft carrier)
with 114,000mi. ticked on the odo before it got it's rear
kissed by a freight train! It actually started and ran.
Roughly. Block and heads are like JokerzWild's engine-
block is D1VE-A2B, heads are D3VE-A2A. Front sump oil
pump-n-pan combo to be gotten rid of quickly! The
original tranny was a C-6, kept the flexplate and midplate/mudshield and starter.

What I wanta do...

Rebuild this 460 for daily driver/towing/farm and offroad.
I'm not gonna dragrace this rig. I'd like to take what I've
got and build it up well but economically if possible. I won't
compomise on quality components but I'm not going to go
over the top. This truck will be a daily driver- it will be used
to pull a 20' travel trailer or a 17' ski boat periodically, it'll see
some freeway miles too.

I'm pretty sure that I'm gonna put a Edelbrock Performer
non-EGR with a 750cfm carb of some species, and a good
recurved distributor on top of the whole mess. Underneath
it'll get a E350 rear sump pan/extended dipstick and a HV
Melling oiler with the rear sump. What's in between is what
I'm asking you folks about.

I'm figuring this big ol' motor is probably gonna turn at least
250 or so HP. My thing is driveability and longevity. I'll have
all the torque I can stand and then some. Heck, I might even install A/C .

Thanks in advance y'all!

Question Advice and help needed- 460 buildup.

no takers, I guess.

At least I got the intake info down-

Edelbrock Performer vs Weiand Stealth

and definitely something 750 cfm lacing
the air with petrol...

Thanks anyway.

Sounds like you have a good combo planned. I'd suggest using an early '68-71 timing assembly to eliminate the 4-degree retard in '72 up engines and a very mild cam with 8-10 degrees more duration on the exhaust side to help poor exhaust flow.

Any upgrade will be better than stock. It's almost like Ford tried to make these things run bad. Old style timing chain is a good idea. Get compression up. Not too much though. Keep it at 9.5:1 or less for fewer problems. I think you want the Performer RPM or the Stealth. I don't see any reason to go with the regular Peformer. You don't lose any substantial amount of torque with the bigger intakes. Anything you can do to make the heads breathe better on the exhaust is great. Whether this is porting and bigger valves, port plates, headers or all the above. Also like was said before you need a cam with a longer exhasut duration to help overcome the bad exhaust breathing. You'll want a cam no bigger than about 220 degrees duration @ 0.050 on the intake and about 8 degrees longer on exhasut. Believe me, you'll still have tons of torque down low with that size of cam. Pearls about 460's: they like big carbs, headers and intake centerlines of 106 degrees. Let us know if you need any more specifics.

Bigsnag and Georgedavila,

Thanks for your help. I think Dhigh45 is gonna be doing the same thing as me. He may need your wisdom as well.

How well does the 460 deal with nitrous- judicially applied
of course... I thought about adding a 150-200 hp fogger
just for S & G's...

Thanks again!

Stock crank would be ok, D0OE rods would be ok, too. You would obviously want to have forged pistons. If I were going to go with a big shot pretty often, I would look first at aftermarket rods and next would be a forged crank. Stock 460 cranks are pretty stout, though.

with that yr motor i would use the 429cj or 460cj heads ported and polished with the 429CJ crank switch the hydrolic cam/lifters to a hydrolic roller cam/lifter set up and use a degree timing chain and an MDS dist, ignition. you mite see a little more tork and horse's and would work good with nos
