thermostat
I dont plan on driving the truck in the winter(I live in eastern Ontario and last winter there was more salt on the roads than snow)cars are disposable but my truck thats a different story!
Your engine wear rates double for every 10F under 180F so at 160F you would get 4 miles of wear on your engine for every mile you drove. Of course your engine only operates a short time below your thermostat set point in the hot summer months. In the winter months a 160F stat could be a real engine killer. In the summer the load on the engine, the cooling system capacity, and the ambient air temp determines what temp your engine runs at, -not the thermostat.
Do what? Never heard of such a thing. Heat is a killer to an engine, not running cooler. I may be way off base but I have never heard of any such 4 to 1 death ratio for a cool running engine. Has anyone else. My old J**P didn't have a thermostat at all and was only taken out of cimmission because the tranny exploded....was a beautiful sight to behold...parts pouring onto the highway. Anyway....I don't see how a 160 could do anything besides lower the opening temp a bit and make thay winter heater take forever.
You engine is designed for a certain operating temp, generally 180-200. That is when you get the best performance, gas milage, and all you emission controls work their best. At a lower temp, things aren't warmed up properly and running too long at that temp could cause problems. Just think if you were to floor an engine that is running at 30 degrees, you could even crack the block! BTW, I'm not saying the 160 thermostat would make much of a difference, but running with not thermostat certainly would!
