I just bought a 97 Powerstroke with manual Tranny. The truck runs great as long as I'm giving it throttle but at idle in neutral there's a terrible rattling and shaking sounds like it's coming from Tranny. Sometimes after I get on it and let off throttle driving down road it does same thing to much lesser degree. The truck seems to shift good other then an occasional complaining syncro in 2nd and 3rd.
I guess I can explain better, rattling usually starts after I give it significant throttle however only rattles at idle. Rattling will go away if I depress clutch or touch throttle. Sometimes it idles fine, other times will almost rattle engine out of truck
I'm assuming you don't know if it has the dual mass flywheel in it. I would recommend removing the inspection cover and checking the flywheel for play. The dmf has been known to blow out the side of transmissions for some so I would do it ASAP.
If you have a single mass flywheel, you are probably hearing "gear roll over", from the transmission. Over filling the tranny can help lesson the noise.
He says he hears it in nuetral. There wouldn't be any gear roll over in neutral
Yeah, there will still be gear roll over noise in neutral. Everything in the trans is still turning when in neutral and the clutch engaged, it's just not turning the output shaft. My '97 did it bad.
