I just replaced the plugs, cap, and rotor on my 89 f250 with a 460 and now it runs like crap. i checked and rechecked the firirg order and everything is good. i even put the old cap and rotor on just to see but it still runs bad. the only thing i can think of is the pcv valve is loose on the passenger side and pops right out if you pull on it. would that make it run bad? i am stumped and very frustrated so any help would be great. the only other thing is maybe i unplugged a vaccum hose somewhere along the way.
If you didnt unplug any vaccum lines. Which would be a good spot to check..Did you gap your plugs. Rotor and cap only go on one way. Reconnect your spark plug wires to your plugs. Maybe one is not making a connection.
Replacing more than one component or part at a time...Always, no matter how simple or mundane it may sound, just change out one item at a time , restart the engine, then shut it down and change out another. This method definitely applies to plugs and or plug wires. Try to make it a no brainer. At some time during a tune up or an R&R, you will probably get a bad part or install something out of sequence and it will drive you nuts as in your situation.
Remain calm and work the problem by systematically replacing the old components one at a time, then start the engine.
Back to your problem , after replacing the cap and rotor, remove and check each plug. Use a multimeter to check for the correct resistance from electrode to top conductor ( typically 6-8 kohms), and make sure there are no shorts center electrode to case. If all plugs are ok take a known good spark plug wire and replace each wire one at a time and start the engine. More times than not, in attempting to remove the plug wire from the plug, the wire separates right at the plug insulator.
