Wow, what a cluster. 134 pages of Sync 3 questions in three months. I happily poached the following info. Not sure how accurate it is:

The new version (2.0) contains the following updates:
•Updated voice recognition engine.
•Bluetooth phone, media, and Wi-Fi improvements.
•Navigation user interface improvements (if equipped).
•Android Auto for supported devices.
•Apple CarPlay for supported devices with hardware upgrade.

There's some good intel in the link you provided. Sounds like a new USB PN is required to use CarPlay. I didn't take the time to read them all...But to do the upgrade you have to visit the dealership? WFT Ford.

 

Ford released it for lincoln owners only, maybe slow rollout. There are 2 versions, the non navigation units, like mine required 2 flashed with formatted usb drives. This is because the memory in these units is just large enough! If you have nav you can do it with 1 flash. The monkey Businesses; You have to download the nav or non nav files and open/un-zip them on the flash drive. Move/make sure they are on the root directory of the drive. You have to format your drives first using fat32. It took 15 min for 1st part & 10 min for 2nd. I ordered the dual usb ports with the security chip for about $60.00. Most of these trucks don't have the proper usb ports Ford isn't going to release this until they have stock of those usb ports, which have been disappearing because 300 of us have ordered them It's unbelievable we need a hardware upgrade for these sync ready trucks

 

Here is a screen shot, my ford website doesn't show the update yet. This is the legal ford version that someone leaked. If you don't want to go to the dealer and pay for this...

 

Ford needs to get their head wired straight. Making folks go to the dealership as the "easy" solution is a waste of everyone's time and money. Can you imagine if Apple or Google required a visit to a store to update? But more importantly, making the user download and manipulate the file is a very bad design and a huge security risk (amplified by the use of USB sticks). There's no reason why the system shouldn't update just like our phones, tablets and laptops. Either automatically or with a simple "Yes" acknowledgement by the user. This is a BlackBerry OS, and they're the leaders (were) in business system encryption for phones. The system should know how to either connect to a Ford server and authenticate a download or read a certificate embedded within the part the user downloaded.

Is the USB swap mandatory for the change or just to use Apple CarPlay. I'm going to have to read up on the features of CarPlay and see if it's worth it.

 

I think the usb upgrade is for car play. Ford will be releasing it, but i think they will want to stock those usb ports and make some $$$ on the deal. When its released you should in theory be able to download it directly to your vehicle. We the people are are volunteering to manipulating those files, choosing to not wait for ford to release it this year, if they do...

 

Well, other than some Bluetooth stability issues that come and go, I'm pretty happy with V1.0. Other than being able to save pictures to the "desktop", I'm not clambering for any new features really. Especially if I have to replace the USB.

Still, will be good to get an update...

 

Just an FYI, I have read all the posts on the ford Forum and subscribed to the thread for sometime now. Apparently an engineer from Ford has provided a link to upgrade Sync 3, v 1.0 to V 2.2. I was apprehensive about it however Ford was supposed to have released the upgrade by the end of 2016 and as of this date they still have not. The version I downloaded is for Sync 3 with Nav. I downloaded the file to my computer. The file is a zip file. I unzipped the file and then uploaded it to a 8 gigabyte jump drive that I had reformatted to FAT 32. Two files were created one called Sync my Ride the other was autoinstall.lst. I then printed the readme file and finally decided to do it. Started the truck and followed the instructions. It took about 15 minutes to install. See below.

THIS UPGRADE IS FOR NORTH AMERICAN 2016 FORD/LINCOLN MODELS WITH SYNC3 V1.0 OR V 1.1 FACTORY NAVIGATION ONLY.
THIS WILL UPGRADE FROM VERSIONS 1.0/1.1 TO VERSION 2.2
YOU WILL NEED A FAT32 OR EXFAT FORMATTED 2GB OR MORE USB FLASH DRIVE
USING A WINDOWS BASED COMPUTER UNZIP THE UPGRADE FILE TO THE ROOT FOLDER OF FLASH DRIVE

Worked great. I checked the Ford website and it showed that my Sync had updated to version 2.2.

That I am not really sure about. I do not think so however this is why I was reading this thread because of the available pics that have been posted. Now that I have upgraded to v 2.2 I am going to try and create a new wallpaper. I am though not the most computer savvy person. LOL I was hoping to get some ideas on the pics from you guys, I will try though and get back to you all.

 

Was Not in any hurry for the update as cell phone coverage out west can be sketchy sometimes. But the I found out that Google let's you download maps for use off line.

So, gonna have to update.
