I ordered 2 Odyssey Group 31 batteries. They got damaged in shipment so they sent me two more. Now I have 2 damaged batteries, I paid $335 each which was the cheapest I found anywhere. They are made out of 99.9% pure lead, they weight 83 lbs each.
My question is: How do I get rid of them, I called one place and they said no I did not buy them there. Called a scrap yard and they will not take a battery with a cracked case.
I think I have an Autozone over in town, will check that out, called another scrap yard and they won't take a battery due to acid spill or leakage. They pay .15 cents per lb for clean lead.
I did check the batteries and they are good, there is no leaks, holding a charge but on the other hand not sure what I would do with them.
Any parts store will take them. They get money for all their pallets of cores and will gladly take a few more free ones.
If you really want to make life easy, put a free add on craigslist for working/cosmetically damaged $300+ batteries. You will have someone at your house to pick them up within a half hour...
I'd take them to another scrapyard, play dumb and see what happens. I've never heard of a scrapyard refusing batteries before.
My thoughts exactly.^^^^
Personally the time it takes to take apart and clean up it's not worth it to me for the twelve bucks you'll make, that would be last resort to keep from the trash.

This brings back a memory...
I had a toilet fail in my 1906 home. The guts went bad and it would not stop running, parts no longer made for it. Only choice was to replace. I unbolted it and managed to get it out in spite of its almost 200 lbs of weight. Got it outside, drained out the water and moved it to the street which was a back breaker even in the wheelbarrow I had. This was back in my fighting trim days, where I ran 5 miles 3 times a week with 50 lbs of sand in my Army rucksack as an Infantry soldier in the Army.
I lived on a street that was a popular tourist attraction and had lots of traffic. I set the toilet down next to the curb knowing that folks would stop for anything on the street since it was old houses and always remodeling going on. I knocked on my next door friend a Marine with a couple of beer in my hand, told him what I had done and we stood back at the fence to watch.
We weren't half way thru our beer when a van stops, guy gets out looks around as if he is stealing something and bends over to lift it in his van. He bends over and does a clean and jerk movement, we heard the scream from where we were standing. Bend forward he heads to his van and drives off leaving us laughing. Into our next beer we see the same van stop, he had gone home and got his two sons, they pick it up, put it in van and drive off...problem solved!
The battery with just the cracked corner looks useable - either plastic cement or plastic welding to fix.
Odyssey batteries are excellent. I bought a similar Odyssey years back for my 1992 Range Rover off road rig with a 9.5k Warn Winch. That battery was not kill-able. I'd recommend them to anyone, and especially over the Optimas.

Thanks, got it on a charger and going to move it down to my entrance gate and see if it works out. Its got a 10 watt solar panel on it, gate is 16 feet wide and does about 5 cycles per day some days more (see pic above my name below). I have had a Sears Plt on it for the past 5 years which is an Sears branded Odyssey and its never failed, but have another use for it in my business so its always being moved. The gate battery is stationary so as long as it hold a charge I am good to go...I got 4 of these and since they are AGM the acid does not leak out, just the outer plastic is broken. In fact I just traded one for a days worth of cabinet work. Guy is thrilled, he is down in the kitchen now working.
