Ok guys, I am not quite wrench worthy but I would like to be. my 73 f100 dent has got low oil pressure. Its goes from 40 on start to 7 after an hr of running. There is also a really loud whine when it starts in the cold too.
Since the stock power was 147 and its a non roller I do not want to put any more money into it. I would like to swap it for another 302 but I do not know all that this quest entails or how much it should cost me. I do not have any engine swap tools either so Can some one point me in the right direction on what I need or can I rent stuff from a local auto parts store?
The purpose of the truck is going hardware store hauling, furniture moving etc, and one day towing a trailer.
Well, you can spend as little or as much as you want. It sounds like you have an Idea of what you want, so start by reading more on that. The simple things to look for in a donor engine or new engine is: spot for mechanical fuel pump, internal or external balancing, oil pan orientation. As for special tools for an engine swap, something to pull the engine and something to support the tranny. I know you use to be able to rent a cherry picker around these parts a hundred years ago when I was young. Not sure now. You can build some thing to do this, watched several videos on building engine pullers the other day. As for tranny support, for a short time a floor jack with a piece of plywood will work. If it is gonna sit for several days or weeks without an engine, a 2x4 on top of fenders and a chain is a better solution.
