Angry Starting issues

I have a '94 3.0 5spd Ranger that has been very kind to me over the years. I have just over 155k on it and never had a serious problem with it. Of course, until recently. I'm not sure if the this is related to the main problem, but Usually in colder weather, the truck would stall when just starting out (cold). It would usually take a couple of minutes to get it started, but it always started.

Yesterday, I went to start the truck.....It turned over, but would start. I cranked it off and on for about 5 minutes and finally kicked on. This morning, no such luck, I couldn't get it to start. I am "working" now, and plan to check a few things when I get home. Just curious if I am on the right track here

Any information would be MOST appreciated.

Welcome to FTE!!!

I would start by checking the fuel pressure and for spark, then pull codes.

Well, got home, and it started up.

The ignition light stayed on though. So, i checked the battery and checked it while the engine is running, guess the battery and alternater are fine. I did however check the coil and when checking the ohms between the positive and negative terminals, I got 0 resistance. Haynes say this could be a defective coil. I will replace that this weekend also. Just curious if an aftermarket coil such as: Accel Ford 1984-98 Super Coil would work better than others.

I did check to see if there were any error codes....None. I don't have the equipment to test the fuel pressure, but I did hear the pump spin up.

Thanks for the help Ken.

Well, I replaced the coil.....doesn't seem to be the problem. still starts with no problems though. Ignition light will not go out. Checked codes...111.....I'm just about out of ideas here. I'm going to replace the belt. I can't see why this is the problem, because of the automatic tensioner, it should hold the tension it needs to power everything, right? or am I mistaken? Never the less, I am going to replace it. Its got a small chunk missing from it. and they are cheap enough.

What do you mean by ignition light? The tensioners can wearout but most of the time you would get noise.

Ignition light.....the light that looks like a battery.

Yeah, I did put a belt in it...of course, that didn't make it go away. The only thing I can think of now is the alternator.

Do you have any other gauges in your dash cluster?
If yes then what does the voltmeter read. If no, have you checked the alternator output voltage?
Have you checked the resistance between the battery cable and the battery post? Have you cleaned the battery terminals?
Have you checked the ground from the battery to the frame?
Have you checked the wires going into the back of the alternator to see if they are intact and not badly corroded and the crimp is still tight on them.
Have you checked the spark? Ken00 suggested that but you never posted a reply saying that you checked it.
Maybe some of these checks will help to correct your problem.

I have actually checked the spark, one of the first things I did. I also check the battery while the engine was running. 14.5v Checked all wire....Battery terminals clean. Haven't checked the ground...I will do that.

Thanx for the help.

My ground cable is really corroded and I had to cut the tip once already to get some clean wire out to get the car started. It has a bunch of cracks too. I'll replace it this week and see what happens...
