While there they told me that both ball joints need to be replaced. Just had the car inspected for the MA sticker a month ago and ball joints are checked then. Could they have gone bad in just a month I passed the inspection. There is no play in the stereing. Am i a victom of the delaer greed they wanted almost $500 for the repairs and is this somthing i could do by myself? any comments
Hi sman,
If there is any play in the (lower) balljoints you can feel it.
Put the front end on a jack, preferably supported under the chassis so with the wheel off there is no load on the triangle.
This vertical play you can feel by moving the brakerotor up and down.
A play of 1 mm is acceptable, if more the balljoint must be replaced (my '95 ex started "wobbling" in corners).
In The Netherlands I payd $34,- each and $28,- for each upper balljoint (connecting rod).
Not difficult to do it yourself, but a lot of labour and you need a hydraulic press for the lower balljoints.
For this reason the Haynes manual advices to replace the triangle as a whole.
As a home wrencher it took me a whole afternoon.
Success, Tony.
