Monday it begins

Drum roll....
Got my new insulated garage door in today and tomorrow the smurfy panel truck gets to come off the trailer in front of the garage. The build begins. I'm going to start by pulling the bumpers so I can move around it once it's inside.
Then start trying to get the bolts out of the torched off hinge stubs.

I got all mine loose by heating them cherry red a couple of times and soaking with pb blaster as they cooled. Then I used a hand impact driver. This impact is a spring loaded steel cylinder that must have a spiral drive inside. You hit on the back with a bfh. You are probably familiar with this device, but some readers may not. I bought it in 1969 to work on my first motorcycle. I think what I like about them is that as it turns the screw it is being driven into the recess with force at the same time. I bet they would respond well to the welding a washer and a nut on them but before they broke.... Best of luck and congrats on the new workspace! We'll be watching the transformation of the smurfmobile with great anticipation.

I got a look at the insides of the pillar on the parts truck when I dismantled it. There is about 3/8" of rusty, decomposed bolt sticking past the thread plate. I have to get those ones out too for the other half of my hinges but with access to the back, I can put the heat to things better.

Funny, I found they would start out pretty decent then get real tough to back out. Wit access to the back could you cut the 3/8" off with a dremel cuttoff wheel or something?

Yep, when those old crappy threads get into the block, they get tight. I got 13 of them worked out by welding on 5/8 nut. Wasn't patient enough on 3 and twisted them off. Then with my total lack of skill to free hand a hole in the middle of a bolt, muddled 2 up, and right together wouldn't you know.
On the pillars I have off that the hinge halves will come from, I'll cut the protruding rusty part off. I got pictures but forgot the camera in the garage so I'll update tomorrow.
Weather is cooling off to work outside. It looks like I will have to roll it in the garage on rims to fit under the 7 foot door.
Anyone need a set of 8 hole 17" one piece wheels?

I have that exact same skill with drilling down the center of something. I don't recall ever going straight. With the drilling anyways. You sure the wheels aren't widowmakers. My first set I had no idea they were multi-piece wheels because no lock ring. If they are one piece I could mount that set of 7.50 17 coursers on my suburban.

Photobucket is down, pics later.
Stupid me, the 17s are 2 piece, didn't realize it until looked on the inside where they come apart.
rainy today so won't get much more done on the body hinge mount. I guess I'll try to weld the crooked holes I drilled shut and use a hinge for a drill pilot to get centered up.
