core support

I recently hit a telephone pole in my 1992 f250 2wd 460 ext. cab long bed. I went to the local junk yard and got a new radiator, core support, hood, grille, and bumper. The ends of my frame are bent in a little bit, and its shifted to the passanger side about an inch. I don't think I am going to be able to bend the frame back. This is shifting my core support to the passanger side, and I cant get my fenders to line up right. I tried using a hyraulic pump and bar clamp to bend them back out but it didnt work, even with oxyaceteline. Any suggestions? Could I make new mounts for my core support? Or new mounts for my fender to the support?

Take it to a body shop for them to pull it straight with an actual frame machine.

I would like to not have to pay a shop to do it. I have never sent the truck to a shop because j prefer to save money by doing all the work myself. Any idea on how much that would run me?

Do not put your pride above your safety.

Many people use tree stumps and come-alongs to pull frames straight. I will fervently advocate the use of an actual frame machine, with a properly trained operator, as nearly anything can be accomplished with a full range of pulling tools. Not only that, but any reputable shop can and will have printouts of chassis dimensions to ensure the frame is back to specification; not to mention if it is in a diamond, good luck.

We've (the shop) done frame work on older vehicles for customers Om the weekends outside the realm of "the books" - normally ran between 300-500$. Worth every penny.

I'll take a look around and see what I can find for a price I am willing to pay. It's not all my pride, it's more my bank account. After paying for the court fees and ticket from the crash, I don't have a lot of cash to be sending my truck to a shop.

I fully understand the monetary concern -

I wrecked my '88 in May this year. Was in a very tight squeeze after the ticket, the courts, and the fact the insurance company refused (read: Didnt even bother to call) to pay for any kind of repair, rental, or medical care. I ended up paying out of pocket to repair the truck. I was very lucky and really only the core support mount was mildly twisted. Mind you, we pay ~7K a year for full coverage. We will be switching soon

Uh, if you have full coverage, how can they refuse to pay?

IMO the bent frame horns are not a safety issue. You can pull them straight using a come-along and a tree, but you will need to use a 4x4 between the tree and the frame behind the bend to keep it from just pulling the whole truck towards the tree. Just eyeball it, you are only talking about cosmetics up in that area.

You THINK only the frame horns are bent. I would most CERTAINLY take it to a frame shop so they can do their thing and see where else the frame is bent

Did I read that right? You pay $7,000 a year for insurance, you wrecked your truck (that's worth less than $7,000) and you didn't report the accident so you could get reimbursed for any of the damage, to either the truck or yourself?

I agree with Diesel Brad. You won't know the extent of the damage until it is properly checked out. You will be money ahead to take it to a qualified frame shop. Do it right the first time

I'm in with Mr Krogoth, Brad and others. And, I'm about to get as cranky as Brad can too. (All the best meant Brad, I really enjoy your input).

Let's see, you crashed your truck and your pocketbook is hurting? Guess what, all those fines and fees are supposed to be a deterrent so you don't do it again! Now you want to either put a shoddily repaired vehicle back on the road, or determine what YOU are willing to pay for repairs? What kind of entitled attitude is that!

Suck it up princess.

I absolutely reported the incident - took the DPS officer over an hour to get to the wreck.

I was called ONCE by the insurance - a month after the wreck.

Even so... I think full coverage on my '89 F150 is something like $450 for the year. Do they at least buy you dinner or give you a kiss on the cheek once in a wile?

The money spent to make sure the frame is square will be well worth the piece of mind for one and it will be easier to get things lined up when you go to reassemble.
