Finally finishing up the Cummins conversion and I must say I really like it. Been doing the 5R110 transmission tuning and it is really shifting well. Even made a fuel mileage check and got 13mpg (much better than the 7.5 the 460 got). Still a few small bugs to work out but I am hacking at them.

Glad to hear the project is still moving forward. Keep us updated....and pics are always welcome.

I am very impressed with this build! I wouldn't mind finding a bus like that!

Any updates? What is left to do on this and if it is running is it living up to expectations?

I love this thing! It's running great, getting 12-14 mpg, and no real problems so far. I still need to change out the tie rod ends and re-align the front end and I'll probably paint it this year, but I'm really happy with how this turned out.

If you're doing any front end work and haven't already checked the ball joints etc this would be a great time to refresh the front suspension.

New Moog parts from Amazon would set you back just under $400 for everything up front; (4) ball joints, tie rod ends (inner & outer) and the drag link too. Another $95 would get new front coils---add in Energy Suspension axle pivot, radius arm and sway bar urethane bushings for another $100 and you've got a brand new truck.

I'm also glad this swap is working out so well--good to know its doable with the right motivation.

It was a lot of work and a considerable investment, but i'm very pleased with the results. Now I have right at $10K in the whole bus.
Actually, all of the ball joints, springs, and bushings are good. I'm only replacing all of the steering linkage. Got new Moog parts ordered from Rock Auto for right at $200 that should be here today.

$10K for your "new" hauler and what it can do is kind of a paltry sum, all in the best ways.

I should have known you'd have already checked most other replaceable components---none of your work so far has been half-assed!

Thought I would give a short update. I liked this bus when it had the 460 gas engine, I LOVE this bus with the Cummins 5.9 engine. Everything is working fine, the 5R110 transmission shifts great in normal and Tow/Haul modes. Still get 13-14 mpg. Bus drives very well and does everything it should without any drama. At some point I may turn the injector pump up, but for now I'm very happy!

That is awesome, I always thought that would be the best option, Ford uses them in their big commercial trucks, I'd love to put a 4BT in my 73 but I could never afford such a project, I'm worried what I'll do when the heads finally give out from the lead free gas today.

sweet build! keep the updates coming!!!

i acquired a 45k mile 89 dodge pickup with the Cummins back in June for 200 bucks. its crossed my mind a couple times to drop that monster into my 95 van or 03 superduty instead of my dream truck at the moment a 48'-50' ford F4 or bigger.
