New Bronco, new issue.

Hey all! My son just bought a '91 Eddie Bauer Bronco yesterday. ($500!) It started and ran nice,I drove it around the block a couple times, all was good. That is until he jumped in to drive it to a gas station. We got about 10 blocks and it started running awful! backfifring, chugging etc, within 2 blocks it was done, engine wouldn't even rev. We popped the hood and started looking closer. SPOUT connector is missing, dizzy was clocked differently then my other 5.8L engines, etc. My buddy tried to turn the dizzy and busted the TFI module so we run to parts store and purchase new unit, installed it and the trouble persisted. It made no difference were it was turned it still ran awful, rich smelling, missing, chugging etc. Opening the throttle body did nothing except stall the engine. Pulled it to a safe house in town and left it over night. After work I stopped by, it fired right up, revs fine and drove like nothing was wrong. Haven't had time to check the codes yet, I'm certain there are some. Anyone have theories to what is going on as I start to solve this problem?

Sounds like a heat related issue. Go ahead and pull codes. Someone smarter than me can give you directions on where to start.
P.S. I havent seen you on here in a while. Hope everything is okay with you.

Previous owner said later it had done it to him, took it to local auto repair shop and they charged him $300, looks like they failed. Price was right, I seem to like the challenging projects. My kid is bummed he can't drive it. y theory is the ECM is overheating, maybe a misplaced wire or 2. Also found out it had a 5.0-5.8 upgrade. Transmission was also changed, not sure but it looks like a C6. 4 wires off the MLPS, none are connected, old MLPS cable tie back out of the way, at least they didn't hack that up.

Just a thought - could be the knock sensor after the engine change. If they buggered that and it is "hearing" engine noises, the ECM will pull timing out until it bucks and runs bad ...

Also, could be that the ground from engine to firewall is on a loose connection, or one that is temp sensitive? I would run some new extra grounds from the top of the motor to the passenger side hood hinge bolt. Use Never-Seize on all the threads and solder appropriate connectors if you can.

Reset any codes after writing them down and try again. You don't know what was done to the wiring until you look it over very carefully.

EB Bronco is a nice piece and the price was right. Just need to figure out if anything was left loose or whatever ...

probably wouldnt hurt to find TDC and check the dizzy that is in correctly. Double check the plug wires and routing.

if they did swap a C6 in i would think they also installed the C6/5.8 ecu which if so that would be ideal. check over the wiring harness to see if they kept 5.0 harness or used the 5.8 harness. If the knock sensor is present, 5.0 harness was used. which is no big deal and will work using the 5.8 computer still.
check all the vacuum lines as well. check fuel pressure with a gauge.

good luck

Ovarian cyst. Fixable, second or third time with these things ruined night of troubleshooting. I also want to get out and fill an archery tag or two.

Tried to get codes, no luck. cleaned connectors and retried, same message. Will have to swap an ECM and try again.

Update for everyone. Installed a new ECM 5.8L, ZF trans. That was not the problem. Went to the distributor and did some more testing and found a low voltage on the PIP signal. It measured 1.4-1.8, normal should be 4.0 or more. Installed a new distributor and now it runs almost perfectly. It still needs some exhaust work done because PO hacked a section out where it crosses from drivers side manifold.
