Looking at diesel again. In particular 2011

Last diesel I had was a 2008 6.4. Got rid of the truck due to the fact that it don't matter what the best that truck seemed to get was 13mpg, and more times than not was in the 12 range, combined with the fact that diesel was 4.50 a gallon, the truck just in fuel was costing me an extra 1500 a year. So I went half ton as these half tons are pretty capable and what I tow and haul is borderline between half ton and 3/4ton.

I got my sights on a 2011 6.7. Crew cab with 89k miles on it. Truck is super clean.

My questions are as follows.

1. What sort of MPG can I be looking at this truck has 3.55 gearing

2. Anything with this model year that I should be aware of or check out.

3. Truck is nearing 100k miles which is nothing for the engine. Is there anything else that might be coming do for replacement or to prepare for.

Hi nards444, welcome to FTE!

My first suggestion is to check out the 6.7L forum a page or two down from this one and do some reading.

The 2011 model year had issues with valves cracking and subsequent catastrophic engine failure. A few longtime members here on FTE had theirs fail, but fortunately most of them were either under warranty or had an extended warranty to cover them. I would not consider a 2011 unless it had the engine or exhaust valves replaced. This is over $15,000 to fix if your engine grenades out of warranty.

The issue was corrected for the 2012 model year, so I would look at those unless there is proof that the issue has been corrected for this one.

I have not owned a 6.7. Lived thru a 6.0!
That said, I WOULD NOT own a modern diesel without a GOOD warranty.
The cost of a major repair on these vehicles is obscene.

being the amount of damage this type of problem does .. WHY RISK IT.. unless you already own one.

Receipt's are the only way to know the problem was fixed..

Not that I'm aware of. Short of a history report or invoice showing an engine replacement I would look elsewhere.

To be fair, I don't think it's a high percentage that have blown up. But those that have let go without warning, and I've never heard of one being rebuilt after that. Typically the repair is a new or remanufactured short block. If the risk was as low as 1-2% I wouldn't take the risk, that's too much money to lose over a known design issue.

My '11 with 3.55s was capable of 20-21 MPG on the highway from day one. Those with 3.31s are reporting better than that.

Coming from a 6.4 that wouldn't exceed 15 MPG I was very happy with it.

I have a 2016 6.7 and on highway I get about 21.5 and overall between 16.7 and 17.3. Just depends how much I put my foot in it. That's with 3.31 gears. I've been on the 6.7 forum for a few months now and it seems most everyone is very happy with their truck.

thanks so far. I kind of need a diesel. and but before with my 6.4 getting 12 mpg already put me in the whole of almost a thousand bucks a year more for fuel vs a half ton. I don't mind paying the 30-40 cents more for a gallon of fuel, if the truck is getting these types of numbers.

What a gallon of DEF run, and how long does it last?

Are fuel filters still relatively easy with one down under underneath the door and one on top of the engine. They still a 10k mile item.

Average seems to be around 1,000 miles per gallon used unloaded. Cost varies, but typically a few dollars per gallon if you're buying jugs at the store. It's cheaper at truck stops that sell it at the fuel pumps, they have a dispenser that sells it by the gallon.

My 2011 6.7 has not given me any problems. Gets between 18-20 MPG
What I really like compared to the older engines is that it's quiet, doesn't have that loud claddering noise.
A 2 1/2 gallon jug of DEF cost about $12 at walmart, I'd say that it burns about that amount every 1000 miles.
