I put new fuel filter under drivers door,,,, also put in new camshaft synchronizer and camshaft position sensor ,,,, 55 pounds of pressure on schraider on fuel rail and holds ok ,,, 3.0 V6 fuel flex,,,,, spray starting fluid in throttle body and truck runs and drives well ,,,,,put about 25 miles on it,,, just got truck with this problem,,, turn off by key and have to spray again to restart,,,, this is a 99 ford ranger xlt extended cab,,,,please post or e-mail me at spook_tn@hotmail.com
Might be a bad engine coolant temp sensor. IIRC the resistance drops as the engine warms up. The PCM/computer uses the temp info to adjust ignition timing & fuel delivery.
The ECT has 2 wires & is probably near the thermostat housing.
ok will give it a try ,,,, sounds cheap and easy so probally not it knowing my luck,,,, a friend told me it could be crankshaft sensor,,,, if i tested right fuel injectors not spraying untill after i spray starting fluid and truck then continues to run, he says maybe crank sensor is faulty and not sending rpm till spraying starting fluid raises rpm up,,, make any sense?????
i have spark on the plugs or it would not start by spraying starting fluid in throttle body,,,, so is bad crank sensor not telling cam sensor to spray untill truck starts after i spray my starting fluid ???????????????????????? after quick spray truck starts and runs fine
ok i replaced the crank sensor and still have the same problem ,,, will not start till i spray starting fluid ,,, then it runs till i turn off the key,,,, anyone got pinout of the computer and diagram of wiring harness ???????????????????
I took a quick look at the diagrams at bbbind.com & see that the PCM power relay feeds voltage to the fuel pump relay. If both of those relays are closing when you turn the key to run, you should see the CEL/check engine light come on & the fuel pump run for 2 seconds. If that's not happening check those relays.
Takes just a minute to sign up for an account at bbbind.com an then you have online access to the diagrams. Good luck
fuel pump does run for a few seconds but the check engine light does not come on at all ,,, could be bad bulb ,, ,,,,, just noticed that i didn't have a lighting CEL ,,,,but i must have overlooked the diagram ,,,,, will try again to find that circuit and relay and change relay if i can find it ,,,, i assume it is a different relay than the fuel pump,,,,,, right ??????????????????
Yeah, it does sound like the CEL bulb is most likely burned out, so i would'nt worry about checking the relay. Since the bulb is burned out theres no way to know if theres any trouble codes except to hook up a scanner and check.
If you're lucky you'll get a code that "splains" why it wont start.
ok changed the computer and it starts without having to spray starting fluid and runs even better than it did ,,,, does not seem to want to idle right ,,,,, not sure of year the used computer came out of,,, hope all lights fan motor and everything work have not had time to check them,,,,, also theft light blinks while its running,,,hhhhmmmmm not sure about that but at least it starts
ok after changing computer not only is the theft light on when truck is running,,,but i think the air bag light is on also ,,, i assume thats what it is ,,,, but the truck starts and runs without spraying the starting fluid finally,,,,, is this another bad computer or a computer mismatch ??????????? not sure what make or model the used computer came out of ,,, anyone got a idea ????????
Yeah, looks like you've got the wrong computer in there.
I just took a quick look at the A-1 cardone website & they list 8 different computers for a 99 Ranger 3.0, and they tell you how to identify which computer you need. Check out their website
If all else fails call their tech hotline, they can tell you everything you ever wanted to know about finding the right computer, since they remanufacture them.
ok took a look at the A-1 cardone site and all computers for the 99 ranger start with ML3 part number ,,, the used computer i put in starts with a SYL i think ,,, will get right computer soon i hope,,,, and hope this will slove all my problems,,,,thanks for the A-1 cardone site ,,, this was very helpfull to me and anyone else trying to find part numbers,,, great tip 87XLT
I had forgotten that you bought this truck used. A few years ago a friend wanted me to take a look at a 97 Explorer that he was thinking about buying. I turned the key and MAJOR RED FLAG. The check engine light did'nt come on for 2 seconds. I did some research & found the connector for the CEL wire was under the hood, and sure enough it was pulled apart/wide open.
If your 99 Ranger is setup the same, i think you will find that connector is also opened up. Take a look under the hood on the drivers side for a connector in a pink/green wire.
