Its not a jail bar or a tonner panel but maybe someone could give it some love.
IMO the 40/41 big trucks are the best looking flathead trucks out there. And no, I don't know anything about the truck or have any connection to it. My guess is that its a '40 based on the V8 on the hood and a tonner frame based on the wheels but I could be wrong.
Very cool truck. Yes it's a tonner with a later 8 lug rear axle. I hope someone scoops it up and makes something out of it. I have that exact same factory cowl. It came with my huge bundle of jailbar parts I hauled last month. It's sitting out front of my shop tonight, but I found a partial photo.
GB, looks like another candidate for a woody. That roof is a mess and would be a lot of work to save.
Anything built with that cowl would be rather boxy. It's meant to be bolted to a flat-faced body. How 'bout bolting it to a shipping container set on a truck frame? Instant vintage motorhome.
Been there, seen it. It's one of the vehicles I left behind last month in Twisp. He offered it to me on my last trip, but I was maxxed out. It is a very nice panel truck. All the fixer-uppers I got from him were a combination of a trade and selling my toro tractor on my way over the pass. I'm not in a position to buy vehicles this nice outright, but it would be awesome to see an FTE'er buy it. The seller, Chris is very solid and a real 'stand up guy'.

Now that is just plain drop dead Awesome! Looking at a long wheelbase '47 with a dump. My buddy wants the hoist and huge flatbed for his chev 2 ton, so we'd split the cost. 400.00 each, but I didn't know what to do with the big old frame. I can just see it with an old overstuffed couch for a seat. Anyone have a 157" truck and can measure it for over all length? It needs to be under 22' for a cheap commuter ferry ticket. I could cut rear frame horns off too. Thanks for the picture. Of course I need another project as the ones I have going will run out in about 2019.....
The chart for the 158" stake bed model shows it's 21.33' long (255.97"). If you are pulling the dump bed before driving onto the ferry, the chassis/cab alone is 19.135' (229.62") long. I'll edit to add the diagrams once I have them loaded. Stu
Thanks Stu. I think my '58 aloha is about 14' and has a big flat window across the front. We never tow it off island because trailers get way, way bigger ticket costs than the one or two cars they displace. Usually about 160.00 coming home with a trailer but with a commuter book a vehicle under 22' is 27.50 round trip. Over the last 37 years I have pulled bumpers off, cut flatbed trailers short and anything else to beat the rules. Last Saturday we hauled a load of old beams and decking being very careful to be under 22' and under height which is 7'-6". This took some doing while loading, but we got on with our commuter book pass. We looked bigger than a 'car' but we weren't... I was hoping they'd measure us, but they took my word for it. I wish they'd gotten out of the booth with their measuring devices. I was 1" under in both directions. I just remembered this thread is about a Railway Express truck on CL. Serious hijack, sorry BAT.

As my college age son would say, "no worries". I always enjoy your posts so feel free to post away.
Thanks friend, I have one college age son, but he works in an auto body shop instead. His older brother and 2 older sisters went the college route, but 3 outa 4 ain't bad. They are all productive citizens and I thank God for that!
You're about two months too late... It's mounted on a '79 landcruiser 4 door chassis and I had to hold my breath while doing some custom cutting in the firewall. Sorry. Somebody showed one on the fordbarn site when I started building my 'truck based woody wagon'. Search that on fordbarn. If you can't contact him, let me know and I'll send him a pm.
