Check engine light or green wrench symbol on dash?
Sounds like limp mode, will it reset if you turn the engine off and restart?

Yes,

Get the code and report back. They should also tell you what it means as well.

It could be that you need a computer update (poo88) code or an EGR issue. All just hard to say with the new motors that are computerized.

Basic motor still functions as always but it works off of sensors and computers.

I'm going to guess po088. Mine is doing the same thing but only with the load of my fifth wheel on it. Saving up time and money for a new high pressure fuel pump. Luckily, we mostly only drive it to tow and I have a commuter car and another pickup so I can replace it when I have time. Hopefully yours is an easier and cheaper fix.

HPFP is probably the problem. You can take it and have it reflashed and see if that cures the issue.

If not then about a 3K to replace the HPFP.

updating of the pcm.

This will broaden the parameters in the VCV..which is part of the HPFP.

The VCV is the issue but you cannot replace it by itself. It is integrated into the HPFP.

Best bet is to take it and see if they will reflash it. Probably cost 1 hour diagnostic fee. Check first.

What kind of damage could I be causing by driving it with that Poo88 code?

Yeah,

That would be the next step. I cost me 3K to have mine done in Texas, warranty paid that amount.
