I'm hauling a 2000# overhead camper towing 2 atv's on my 92' f-350 hughes performance e4od with aux. trans cooler [12row not recommended by the trans manufacturer to run through radiator], anyway the trans on a 12-15 mi pull in the rockies gets up around 250*+ makes me real nervous , I've cleaned and flushed the cooler and didn't seem excessively dirty but still overheats, seems like it's getting worse with age [seems odd tho ]. Should I jus get the biggest cooler I can find and be done with it ?
Many people think the ATF runs through the radiator to warm it in cold weather. That is completely untrue.
If there was a transmission failure the trans cooler in the radiator could be full of debris. The best way to deal with this is to replace the radiator. Some radiator shops can clean it out.
Thanks for all your suggestions , I ended up ordering a cooler recommended for 22000 # tow capacity what ever that means. It is a couple square inches larger than came with the manufacturers oem but twice as thick and the cooling fins are 1-1/8 " compared to 3/8" . Also going to service trans and change to synthetic ATF to help with cooling. If this doesn't work , I'll put an auxiliary fan dangit ! I WILL win !
