I have searched the forums but cannot find this exact issue.
02 Excursion V10 4x4. Slight missing at times recently, but nothing too bad,and hadn’t gotten around to doing anything with it yet, as we only drive it a few times a month for hauling.
But now suddenly, it is nearly immobilized. Starts fine, revs fine, (with a very minor miss still there), put it in gear, idles ok, but when you add ANY load, eventouch the gas, with or without holding it still with the brakes, it dies. Instantly... it doesn’t stutter and die. It dies like you turned off the key. You can creep it along at idle speed, but touch the gas and poof.
The only codes are p0720 and p0722, which are the OSS. I have seen that mentioned as an “outlier”code when you actually have another issue. I suspect a bad COP or more, but I haven’t seen any posts where the thing won’t even move without dying. They are all seeking a fix for a minor miss or such while driving.
Pulled all COP wires one at a time at idle, (Not under load, no one to help me with that right now) and noticed rougher idle on every one.
Alternator is fairly new and putting out 14vdc. COPs are Accel and have maybe 20-30K miles on them.
Good points. I will check the grounds tomorrow. Not sure what the easy way is to check fuel pressure on one of these.
There is a test port on passenger side toward the rear end of the fuel rail.
Does seem like a low fuel pressure problem, not really ignition.
A clogged CAT would allow some speed before loading up and killing power.
Hook up a vacuum gauge and record vacuum readings while idling and dying. These engines will die immediately if the of the 1" black hose is pulled off the intake tubing. Check PCV system make sure is good there. So you could have a substantial vacuum leak.
Fuel filter could be plugged, just put a new one on. Only takes a few dollars and 20 minutes to do.
Varify no one put e85 in tank or diesel fuel. Probably not diesel since it starts though.
Check fuel pressure at rail.
If those prove ok, start with cleaning throttle body and MAF sensor. Then check the IAC.
It could be a lot of things but the first thing that comes to mind is the boots, on my 2000 V10 they weren't sealing at the top and moisture would get down into the plug hole. It would idle but no go under load, 10 new boots and all was fine.

Yes, I have had a similar issue. Fixed it by sealing the plastic trim above the upper intake. Typically this only affects 1 to 3 cylinders and did not cause my EX to die. It just missed badly after a rain shower or car wash.
Still a very real possibility. Good suggestion.
Also, I learned the hard way that low transmission fluid levels in transmission can cause engine to die under load. Typically reverse. Not sitting in park or neutral and reving motor, but it's easy to check just in case.

When the trans is put in reverse I've measured the cooler line pressures jump 10 psi.
There's some rerouting of fluid flow in reverse which may increase the load on the engine.
Fuel filter replaced. Not a fun job when you have no pavement and limited jacking ability! No change. Ignition work and fuel pump testing are next. (Need to get a fuel pressure tester.) Does anyone know where the pump is on this model? Posts and how-tos all say in the tank but the Ford manual says left frame rail.

Excursions also have a 44 gallon tank. Something your not going to want to drop unless it is low on fuel. Definitely test with a gauge off the fuel rail shrader valve first. Did you look at the PCV elbow under the throttle body? See video below. How many miles are on the engine?
