I just did head gaskets on my 1989 F150 302 5.0L engine. I simply removed the rockers and pushrods. I am ready to reinstall the rockers and pushrods. I did not turn over the engine at all since I removed the rockers and pushrods. Because they are non adjusting can I just put them back in and torque down to the same position the lifters are currently or do I have to do something different? Any advice would help.
They're non-adjustable so just put them back in and torque to 18-20 ft. pounds.
Need to make sure that each lifter and rocker your working on is on the base circle or where the valve is closed. This will ensure you don't strip the threads where the bolt tightens down. There is always a chance of it happening when the valve has spring pressure due to the lifter being at the highest point on the cam lobe and the valve being open.
I think the biggest issues is making sure the push rod is in the lifter and rocker properly. If not you can bend the pushrod just running the rockers down tight. Rolling the motor over for each cylinder will ensure if you have any question.
