FE 460

Hey folks first time user. Sorry to say I do not own a Ford at this time. Two Chevys and Harley. I am in a bit of a time crunch so please excuse me for getting right to the point. I have a Ford FE engine and I'm trying to determine the displacement. The intake manifold thermostat mount points up. From what I have read on other internet sites the FE engine does not come in 460ci. But the intake manifold says it is. Any information would be greatly appreciated. I need to sell this engine to raise some cash because I'm out of work at this time and have to pay my bills somehow. Please could you tell me what this engine is worth. It was a running engine when it came out of the truck, but its been setting for awhile. I will try to add some pictures if I can. Thanks for your time and expertise.

Welcome to FTE!

OK, some questions.

How do you know it is an FE motor?

Where did you get the "460" in your thread title?

FE motors have the intake manifold extending under the valve covers. As has been said by one of our smarter members, "Helen Keller could id an FE".

As for displacement, they pretty much all look alike externally. There are some clues, but checking stroke would be the first step. A wire down a plug hole will get you close enough. See the FAQs at the top of this forum.

Did the pics I added show up? The intake and head meet up under the valve covers, flat oil pan to block surface, 5 bolt valves cover, 352 cast in block. I was told it might be a 460. Thanks again.

Can't see any pics.

Sounds like you have an FE.

A 460 is a different series motor. All different, called the "385" series. Related only by blue paint and the oil filter.

As for what you have, hard to tell. Any tag on the intake near the coil? Any tag on the carb? 2bbl or 4bbl?

Can you find casting numbers on it?

None of this will tell actual displacement, but it will tell you what it isn't. Like it is not a 427 or a 406, that's pretty easy to figure. All else, you can rule some in and out via date and casting codes, but to be sure, you have to measure.

Most likely a 352 65-67 truck or 360 68-76 truck. If you can get a couple hundred grab it.

EDIT: He started a new thread and put the photos there, sorry bub, if you have someone that wants it take what they will give you. Asking is one thing, getting is another.

Threads merged - definitely an FE.

If that C9AE intake is original to the motor, it's a 1969-and-up - interesting thing, it's a 2bbl passenger-car intake. Which doesn't mean much, but it could actually be a 2bbl 390 passenger-car motor from a full-size.

Um its definately an FE motor, just have to detemine the displacment of it, and its not a rear sump oil pan, so its not from truck. I would sell it would like 200-300. Hope that helps.

There are front-sump pans in trucks, just not the 4x4 ones

It came out of a pickup, late 60s early 70s, 2wd. Thanks for all the replies. I am really enjoying reading the replies and learning. How do you know it is a passenger car intake? Why didn't my pics show up at first? One post says threads merged, is that something you did or I when I tried to repost the pics?

I merged both of your threads in this single thread so everyone could see the pictures

While there are exceptions, and this is obvioulsy one of them (maybe) that intake has a casting number that starts with C9AE - C is 1960, 9 makes it 1969, and the "A" is what I consider "automotive" - as in regular passenger car stuff. So it's a part that was engineered for the 1969 model year, originally for a passenger car.

That didn't stop Ford from using a perfectly good passenger-car part for a truck engine though. Certain parts, being originally engineered for trucks would be xxTE - "T" being "truck".

Or, someone threw a passenger-car intake on it for whatever reason.

I now duck my head and run and hide somewhere, because I'm sure someone will flame me for grossly oversimplifying Ford casting numbers

Now for the bad news.....
your 360/390 pickup truck engine is probably worth an amazing $100-$250!!!
(sorry so say, but a "it ran when it was taken out years ago" means it is a non-running core)

I don't mean to rain on your parade, and certainly try to sell if for whatever you can, but I just hope that this isn't some huge plan to "catch up on your bills" (because it might just pay for a few little bills). Either way, good luck, and for resale value reasons, measure the stroke, a 390 is worth more than a 360.

Especially one that looks like it's been rained on/in for some time.

Where are you located, if I may ask?
