My new to me 1989 f350 460 project has me stumped on,a few issues. I bought the truck with a dead miss that was due to no compression cyl. 5 due to burned valve. I had both heads rebuilt with new valves seals and fresh deck. All cylinders after heads were done read 150+ psi compression and cross hatch looked good. Deleted smog pump and lines and plugged the pink vac line for tab. I have the following issues currently:
1. The truck burns alot of oil. I burn almost a,quart per 100 miles. Ive changed it twice with different brands and always, motorcraft fl1a filter. It doesnt visibly smoke or leak but i do smell oil burning especially after engine braking down a hill (manual trans). Coolant is not contaminated.
2. My pcv valve receives full mani vacuum thru a,large dia. Hose from back of plenum. According to my vac diagram that looks correct, but even with a new pcv it sucks to my thumb if i pull it out of the valve cover? Is this normal?
2. I have codes 542, 332, and 211. My cel comes on every time i drive it. I did switch tanks while driving recently if that matters. Also the distributor is brand new but module is old.
3. After doing the heads,i,noticed the truck idled very high (1100rpm). If i unplug the iac it eventually dies. It looks like someone may have bent the throttle stop tab that rests againsts the set screw you dont touch (I imagine it didnt idle right on 7 cylinders). Does anyone have a pic of that tab to see if mine is bent?
You can have good compression but still burn oil, the oil control rings could be done.
Unfortunately burning oil, especially while downshifting, is a firm indicator of bad oil control rings at the very least. Only fix is an overhaul, or the cheapest oil you can find.
It is possible for oil control rings to gain back some lost function, but this is only in events where they get contaminated from something odd. 99 times out of 100 when they're done, they're done.
If you were ingesting that much oil through the pcv you'd be able to find copious amounts in the intake manifold.
Any ideas on the codes im getting? It seems the 542 code is the active one that sets the cel every time i drive. But if the fuel pump loses ground how can it still work?
