I entered my VIN into the handy online VIN decoder, and it is apparently invalid! I double checked the registration's VIN w the the truck's and they match (that was a scary few minutes wondering if the truck did not match registration)
It has to do with check digits and other stuff. If the manufacture does not inform the decoder people about the check digits than you will get a invalid vin. I see it on trailers all the time
Mostly just curious about what I can learn from the VIN, there might be a surprise. And now, a bit more interested to see how to get around an invalid code.
Also a huge sense of relief, courtesy of FTE, that an invalid code is not unusual and all is fine with the paperwork!
Positions 1-3 (1FT) - manufacturer - yup, its a Ford truck, completed
Position 4 (N) - dual airbags
Position 5-7 (X21) - F250, 4X4, Supercab
Position 8 (F) - 7.3L turbo dsl, made by Navistar, net brake HP 215-275
Position 9 (O) - check digit, it checks out
Position 10 (3) model year - yup, its an '03
Position 11 (E) Plant - it like bluegrass having been made in Kentucky
Position 12 -17 (A41512) - its a Ford (if all numeric, it would be a Nissan)
And ExPACamper - You're right, no new insight except it 21-5-275 hp available for engine brakes.... I kind of prefer the mysterious 'invalid' result better than the plane jane.

Fixed it for you. Printed on the Certification Label are codes for the PAINT / DSO / TYPE/GVW / TRANS / AXLE. Post 'em if you'd like these decoded.
btw: FTE VIN decoders aren't worth 2 cents, have errors and omissions. LMC's are even worse!
