Exhaust and Steering Box Interference

Another interesting finding from my latest acquisition. While working on the bottom end of the engine I noticed this. Anybody recognize the steering box or have an idea why there is such an interference between the box and the manifold? It hasn't worn completely through the manifold quite yet.

What do your motor mounts look like?

Yup, likely motor/trans mounts are old and squished allowing the engine to settle. Mine doesn't clear by much, but it's not touching.

That's the wrong nut on the steering box sector shaft, BTW. Should be a sealed nut so oil can't weep out along the threads (only from every other joint).

The engine will coming out very soon for crankshaft work so that will be the perfect time to check the engine mounts. Everything else on the truck is new so I would be surprised to see old mounts. Of course after seeing the engine snafu I wouldn't rule out a similar error on the engine mounts.

The nut is a nyloc but the thread doesn't engage the nylon insert. What does the correct nut look like?

It is a regular nut with the outer end welded shut. I've used an acorn nut but it's tight to the exhaust... not what you want. If what you have is working, I wouldn't fret it.

With the engine out it would be a good time to install power steering and headers.

Reds Headers provide good clearance for Toyota power steering box.

Thanks Pete

I am trying so hard to resist doing anything else that would slow my progress to getting the truck running and on the road. There are endless upgrades that are tempting me right now on the suspension and engine but I MUST resist. I want to get the engine fixed and the truck in paint before next summer so that I can drive it. I will be collecting stuff for projects like the steering for the end of next years driving season.

I know the feeling but from experience I hate it when I am taking things apart that I put together previously. The bracket for the Toyota steering box is odd shaped and is much easier to get in without the engine in place. Just saying . . . my 2 cents.

Toyota box is on the left

Unless you are running really fat, short tires, or parking all the time, I've found no need for PS. It adds a whole bunch of complication to an otherwise simple vehicle. Especially with a flathead.

Pulled the motor today.

Mount looks pretty bad but not completely pancaked. Is there a source for good mounts, perhaps urethane?

NAPA has them (imports) for a '51. Not so easy to find for a '52, though - which I have. - Bob

That looks exactly like the mount pads we used on Gary's truck got them from Speedway.

I'd also expect Classic Haulers www.classichaulers.com would have them.

Dennis Carpenter makes them, sold by C&G and others, but everyone seems to be out of stock on the upper piece.

Speedway Motors shows them in stock for $19.99 a pair. I need to order engines gaskets so I'll tack the mounts on to the order. Thanks everybody.
