I have an 06 f350 drw. I tow my fifth wheel about once a month. Fifth wheel is about 14k. Truck Is my daily driver. It's mostly stock except for cat delete, blue spring, coolant filter and Rotella ELC.
My question is:
I have an sct tuner that I'd like to use. Should I run trans only, trans with EGR off, tow tune with egr off or just run it stock? I've towed it stock but would like a little extra oomph. What's the effect of turning the egr off with respect to coolant temp and oil temp spread?
Innovative had a nice trans only tune with grade braking. Do you have have studs? If not I would shy away from more HP, the trans and engine RPM's make a good tow vehicle when tuned.
Can't help with egr questions as mine is missing but the canned tow tunes are not too bad. I ran both pulling a 10k 5th wheel with stock bolts and no problems.

No studs. I only have canned tunes. Not trying to hot rod it, just give it a little help. I thought the weight of trailer would be too much for the 50 hp tow tune
Some research after beginning to sport a P0766 (Shift Solenoid Performance) code along with a P2703 (Transmission Friction Element Apply Time Range/Performance) code on my 05 Excursion, I have become a HUGE fan of the preventative replacement of the two trans solenoids responsible for the 3-5 shift.
It's crude, but I threw a quick page up at Transmission Upgrades in hopes to have others avoid the multi-thousand dollar bill I am now looking at.

I'm not having any issues with my trans but I was going to replace the pan and filter with the 08 version. Didn't know anything about the solenoids.
Hmm...I did see a missing price on one of the individual solenoids, but everything else seemed to be in order. Could I trouble you to check again?
For the pan itself, note that we can either get you the OEM 6.4L transmission constructed of tin at OEM Transmission Pan 8C3Z-7A194-B or you can opt for the far more rigid 3/8" aluminum pan intended to minimize the chances of a transmission case fracture at 5R110 6.4 HD Pan.
Hope this helps folks avoid my current nightmare!!
Yeah, I didn't know anything about the solenoids until now either.
If you search on FTE for that P2703 code, you'll see plenty of discussion on it. I have no idea how it escaped me. Sigh. Very likely my shot main drive clutch could have been avoided.
Ignorance isn't seeming to be the bliss that it's cracked up to be.
So a couple hundred views and nobody's thinking towing and tunes on an unstudded truck may not be a good idea? I know where talking mostly trans only stuff but I think the OP was looking for a little more grunt.

You're right Rusty. I know running tunes on an unstudded motor is risky business, especially higher hp tunes. That's why I asked about the lower hp tow tune. I'll be running trans only with the egr off.
I'd also caution about thinking that just because you are studded, that you are 'guaranteed' to never have a blown head gasket ever again. If you push a studded truck hard enough, you'd blow the head gaskets regardless of having the studs.
