I have a 94 F-150 Supercab 4x4 shortbed with the 5.0/5 speed. I currently carry a small bed-length cab-over camper, but have been considering a 18-22 foot trailer. It carries the cabover fine, even climbing into the Sierra mountains, except gas mileage drops to about 10mpg. When I checked to owners manual for max trailer tow its telling me 3100 lbs for the 5-speed, but the auto is 6800 lbs. Is this true? Can anyone tell me why the big difference? Does anyone have any experience in towing with the 5-speed? Thanks

I would bet you have a mazda 5 speed, which is a light duty transmission. Yes, i would bet that that is true. The mazda tranny is not very strong, specifically the OD.
Is a ZF a manual trans from another year Ford or from a different model? A different trans would probably mean other modifications. Any idea of what it would take to swap? I wonder if the same transfer case would work?

The ZF tranny was used in the 250s and is a much stronger/better 5 speed. I believe it has a low first gear and its a very very good transmission. Now, they did use some on the f-150s, but i believe it wasn't an option, they just threw them in becasue they had some extras around. This tranny will bolt up to your engine, i'm not sure if you need some mods to hook it up to your transfercase or not. I don't know much about that because i've never done it. But i do know that the ZF will fit w/o much of a problem. You'll have to wait for someone to help us out with the mods thing, but it will fit! ha. It is a small chance that you do have a ZF though. Look at your transmission, the way you can tell is that the Mazda has fins that are vertical and horizontal. The ZF has diagonal fins.
