My mother in law has a 01 xlt 4x4 with the 7.3. The body is in pretty bad shape but the engine and drive train are in good condition. The engine has about 150k miles but has been well maintained. The underbody is pretty much rotten from salted roads in Montana. The front fender and bumper are tore up from a blowout and the body has rust spots along lower sides. She's wanting to sell it but doesn't know what to ask for it. Does anyone have any idea of a fair asking price for it? Kbb said around $10k for fair condition but I would consider it a little worse than fair. I will try to get some pictures if that will help. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Here's what you can get for 9-10K here. These are the ASKING prices. How does yours compare?
All of these have been for sale for over 30-60 days as well.
Doesn't compare at all. Body wise hers is way worse. I'm gonna try to get some pics. I don't really know a whole lot about diesel trucks and 4x4s but when she asked me what I thought it was worth I said I wouldn't pay more than 3500-4k for it. She seems to think that the motor alone is worth that so I told her I'd try to do a little research to help her find out what would be a fair asking price
I think you are right. 4 grand or less for beat up rust bucket sounds about right. You can always tell her to test value by listing it on Craigslist and see what interest or feedback she gets.

True, but a person can get a replacement 7.3L and install it in their no-rust body and only be a few grand down.
A rusted out body means a ton of rust everywhere else too, and it costs a helluva lot more to fight widespread rust cancer on a vehicle than it does to replace the engine.

This is exactly why I found a Chevelle that had barely any rust, and what little there was was easily and relatively cheaply replaced at a body shop. Drivetrain and engine stuff is peanuts compared to fixing a cancer-mobile.
