2011 Carrier Bearings failure, again.

Has anyone else had any issues with the carrier bearings going bad?

My 2011 SCREW ECOboost has 85,000+ miles and now has the 3rd set of bearings in it. Originals lasted until last December, and just had them replaced again under the parts warranty this week.

I did use this truck to pull a 30' RV trailer for a year or so early on. It has not towed that since the first replacement. Only towing I do is my pontoon boat about 5 miles round trip to the gas station, a tandem jet ski trailer the same distance, or a trailer with my golf cart on it.

Anyone have similar problems?

Thanks,
Don

That is odd. Maybe shim the carrier bearing down or look into possibly investing in a single piece driveshaft. I would also check and make sure that they install a quality replacement.

Thanks for the reply.

Quality of parts is certainly in question in my mind. BUT the replacements were genuine Ford parts and my local Stealership did the work. I have an extended warranty that paid last December, and again this week as a parts warranty. I spoke to the tech and he states it is setup correctly with proper shims etc. I did inspect the old bearings and both the inner and outer races were pitted.

What difference will a one piece drive shaft make on the Carrier bearings?

Got to thinking....

I may not have been clear. The bearings I am referring to are the internal bearings on each side of the center chunk in the rear end.

I see now why above poster mentioned a one piece drive shaft.

I following you now. I was kind of thinking originally what you were thinking when you were talking plural and there is only one carrier bearing on the driveshaft. I don't know much about rear ends in vehicles but the only thing I got is improper installation possibly or backlash isn't set correctly?

I think your best bet is to consult a differential specialist. Obviously something is now out of spec. The dealer could keep throwing bearings at it but there is an underlying issue that is causing the bearing failure.

My guess would be excessive preload... but I know just enough about setting up a dif to really get into trouble so let me second Olytlr and suggest taking it into a specialty shop.

Should there be a Ground wire from the differential to the frame? I have not ever heard of this but we learn every day. I have not been back under the truck since it was in the shop but was curious if anyone can give me more info as to what to look for etc.

check for grounds on the engine, transmission, and rear end. poor grounds can damage bearings.....its rare, but it can happen

Neither have I until recently.

Above poster mentioned it, and I read one other comment someplace about the need to ground the rear diff.
