There will never be another Super Duty based SUV. It won't take over the Suburban market like ford wants to and the poor mileage will hurt Fords ability to meet the mileage standards.

youre crushing my dreams man. I want an excursion so bad.
IDK about it being unfeasible from an economy standpoint, 6.7L with an 8-10 trans and the rights gears is a 20mpg+ combo. The Expedition XL is alright for what it is, but a body-on-frame SUV with 10K+ towing and either a 6.7 or 5.0 EB would be a beast.
The Excursion nameplate is probably dead for a few more generations at least. Too much baggage. Maybe a Bronco first, then a Bronco XL? That would bring back a solid name and give 3rd row seating a shot somewhere new.
So...now that the 2017 SD will share the ***** F150 cab....is there going to be a Expedition option with a solid rear end?
That is about the only good news I have to hold on to. I hate all the electronics and gizmos and the F150 too boot.
I liked that the F250 was its own robust beast.
What about aluminum....how much of the SD will be earth turd metal?
Be glad that the F-150 came first with all the gizmos and aluminum. By the time the 2017 SD makes it to market, it should in all sense of the word be problem free.

20+ m.p.g. out of a 6.7L Powerstroke? No way, not a chance. You might see that during a steady cruise unloaded, but the 6.7L would never get a 20+ E.P.A. rating. I have 4 of them, and frankly the mileage sucks (the other diesels are not much better these days).
As far as a 3/4 ton SUV is concerned, I don't see that happening. G.M. dropped the 2500 Suburbans in 2013 due to very low sales, though Chevy will offer a 3500 Suburban for municipal/utility fleets next year. No, won't be available for retail sales. Sorry to pee on your picnic.
You might get 20mpg if you have a 80mph tail wind, going down hill, in neutral, drafting a semi, doing 55mph, with the engine off and you're the only one in the vehicle and you don't have an A/C equipped vehicle, hardly any diesel or DEF in the tanks. They are not adding the 10 speed any time soon in these trucks, might be in 2020 or so but the 6 speed is here to stay for now.
I think an F150 based Bronco would sell better than the Ranger platform, because that would be homage to the 90s Ranger/Explore/Mountaineer...same frames different body. But it would have to go against the Jeep, which is a narrower body (width wise vs F150) and is a somewhat better trail rig, not that the OBS Bronco was not a bad rig. I think the Bronco would sell much more than a new Excursion. With how much BS they have to go through with a vehicle that would weigh 800+lbs more than a crew cab short bed F250, plus an expensive price tag for even a basic XLT model...it just won't sell.
Besides there are plenty of people who would love to buy a brand new Bronco, hopefully they'll make a factory 4 door Bronco, instead of having Century doing those conversions (even though they are pretty sweet). 2.7L EcoBoost and 4.10s would fit the bill nicely and maybe the 3.2L Duratorq I5 diesel just cause we can.
