Usually hang out in the 61-66 forum; however, neighbor has a 97 Ford F250 extended cab with the 5.4 liter engine and approx. 155k miles but kept in pristine condition. I should be able to get it for around 5 or 6 K but Before considering thought I would check w/ member's who are familiar with the 1997. Seem to recall there was an issue with finding a replacement throttle cable and he ended up mending the original. Also, seems there are these 'coil' paks, which occasionally go bad and require special tools, engine diagnostic reader, etc?? Anyhow, opinions appreciated.
well, the truck in 18 years old. There will be some parts that are not stocked anymore. There are many parts that are standard with the new trucks or made by aftermarket vendors if there is a real need.. COPS (coils) are not a big deal. If one fails , you can buy a code reader for $100. or go to Auto Zone and let them read it for you and tell which coil is bad. 1997 was the first year of the newer body style.. many improvements by 2000- 2001. A lot depends on condition since it is 18 years old... "problems" are either gone or out of date by now !!
I would be more concerned with other items
-when was the transmission oil changed last?
-how old is the antifreeze ?
-is the alternator original, they last 150-170K miles ?
-when were the spark plugs changed.. should be 100K miles.
Appreciate the comments! I will check his current records. Appears my moderate mechanical skills is sufficient to maintain the truck, seem to recall he did mention including a scanner.
The neighbor, who is selling the truck, is the personification of an 'A' type when it comes to the upkeep of he and his wife's vehicles. If I were to purchase a used vehicle from a private owner, he would be at the top of my list. He keeps records of all maintenance, repairs, and tune-ups, the slightest unaccounted for noise he immediately has his mechanic check it out and either replace or repair. Bottom line, the truck appears as if it just came off the show room floor. He recently mentioned he's not sure about the transmission, apparently there is an occasionally noise he's not familiar with, I drove the truck and did not notice anything, may use it for bargaining on final sale price.
Thought I would check if there were any issues with that particular year. This 'neighbor' has a 2014 F150 and has had to take it in on few occasions due to brake issues?? Again, appreciate the information!
