I have a '96 XLT with the 4.0. noticed today that my upper radiator hose had sucked in on itself and there was a lot of suction when I took off the cap. the overflow tank was about 1/3 full and I was able to put about 1/2 gallon of water in the radiator. I was under the impression that the new cooling systems were a low or zero pressure system. What do the members here think? I drove about 20 miles home from the work sight and the hose had filled out and the coolent level was higher in the resevior.
Thanks for your thoughts.

When last was the radiator cap tested, or replaced???? EDIT: If the cap is new, or checks out ok, look for a crimped coolant recovery line between its radiator & tank connection points. My then brand new Ranger was collapsing the lower radiator hose & the Dealer service tech found the factory had routed the recovery line beneath the recovery tank & pinched the line closed.
As far as I know the cap is original. I will probably replace it this weekend for good measure. I noticed that the recover line is a loose fit at the radiator. Probably due to age.
I am going to clamp it to check and see if it helps.
Cap says 16 psi on the top. replaced it and the upper hase since it seamed a little on the soft side. So far things are working as they should. The new cap seams easier to take on and off.
