Ok....I just bought an '88 Ranger Ext. Cab 4x4 and this drivetrain problem is driving me nuts!!! It has touch drive/5-speed manual trans./auto hubs I'd like to change over to manual everything. Anyway, when it's driven, there is a rumble...I mean like heavy rumble coming from what sounds like everywhere. It's not a whine like a trans. or T-case problem, it's sounds like maybe a driveshaft issue or a diff. It does this no matter what speed I drive it at and it does it coasting in neutral. It's not the clutch either...it engages smooth and there is no chatter and it's not warped. The guy told me it goes threw U-joint every two years. I'm thinking bent driveshaft. Dunno...can any of you guys give me a place to start I know your thinking...why did you buy this truck. Well the guy sold it for $2000 with a perfect body, no rust, interior mint and 180K. I have an '86 Std. cab with a 302 and c-4 trans. already built but the body is falling apart...I can put my foot through the floor board and all most Flintstone it. I put a plate there so I can drive it and not get my feet wet
Please Help
Sounds like you already got it figured out. I would take the driveline out and take it to a driveline shop and have them check it for straightness and balance it. Probably fix the problem.
When you take it out check the output shaft on the t-case and the pinion on the rear end for play. Could be a bad bearing causing that rumbling but probably the driveline.
I'll check that out too. The guy said he changed the U-Joints but they look pretty bad. I think I'll just spend the money and replace them all along with greasing everything that has a zerk. The rumble is really low sounding....it almost sounds like a set of TSL boggers on the highway at low speed from inside the cab....wierd. If I can't find anything on the driveshafts I'll drop the front shaft and drive around the block to see if it's a front axle or hub problem...it couldn't hurt and I have all the time in the world. The guy also hasn't changed any diff., trans, or T-case fluid since he's had it...Arrrggg. Oh Well...off to the parts store. Thanks again rrmike...I really appreciate the help.
by the way he said itg spits out u-joints, it the shaft has the CV joint that could be the cause of the whole thing. my CV in my broncos rear shaft did the same thing, it's not the cheapest part to replace whenb ya thow one one playing, since i only trimmed the fenders at bit to clear my 35" boggers instead of lifting it i was able to have the CV cutt out since i have no plans on lifting it.
Well, I think I found the root of the problem. The truck has the two-piece (the 1ft section and the 4ft section) rear driveshaft and doesn't have CV joints..thank god The stupid thing is that the one thing that I don't check is usually the problem. I found that the carrier bearing on the crossmember was eatin' to pieces. There were absolutely no ballbearings left in the races. I did go ahead and replace all the u-joints just for kicks anyway...about an 8hr job. But at least it saved me from gettin'[ a new drive shaft or two. Thanks guys
