1982 F150 Build Up!

Ok so about a month ago I picked up a 1982 F150 2wd 4.9 4spd for $700. The truck has absolutely no rot on it and is incredibly clean. The PO told me it spent the last 20yrs sitting inside a mechanics shop. Aside from the body/chassis, mechanically the truck is in poor condition from sitting so long. I pulled the oil pan the other day and found a piece of a piston skirt laying on the bottom along with massive amounts of sludge. I plan on replacing the engine with a 302 or 351 I haven't decided which yet. Also hoping to find a 4spd with granny gear to replace my current transmission as it's the SROD 4spd w/overdrive. I'll post some more pictures soon of the truck/progress.

Ouch, that sure is a piston skirt. Congrats on the truck. It does look to be in pretty good shape. What does the inside looks like?

Here's the only picture I have of the interior at the moment. It's in pretty good shape, but I am missing a door skin and the dash has a few small cracks around the speaker. The seat is in perfect condition which is a plus, but it's an ugly red .

Tonight I worked on disconnecting some wiring and hoses from the engine to get it ready to be pulled. Just have to get the picker and unbolt the engine mounts and it'll be out! Hopefully I'll have time to pull it this weekend.

If you are getting rid of the 6 cylinder, some on the forum have recently been looking for factory air cleaners and associated hoses.

The interior looks to be in pretty good shape. My original seat looked just like that one.

I am doing an 82 build as well. Gary Lewis may have a door skin you can get fairly reasonable. He also has a lot of parts for these bullnose trucks.

I will post a link to my thread. I am about to get started on the motor rebuild and swap.

I would swap in a 351W. Those are the truck small blocks. The 302 is more suitable for a car. They don't have the low end torque the 351's have.

Good luck F-ReV!

I just got an 82 as well. I got lucky and it has a blue seat, but the rest of the interior is that tacky red! lol

Nice truck, looks solid from the pics.

That would be great if he had a door skin, I know they're usually ridiculously priced every time I find one. I really want to keep the 4.9 but the prices I'm getting just to get the block machined are pretty high. If I can do it for a decent price I'll rebuild it and throw it back in.

That's awful I'm so glad my whole interior isn't red haha. The truck is pretty solid just needs a good amount of mechanical work from sitting so long, which I rather do mechanical work than body work any day!

Was able to pull the engine from the truck today. I definitely underestimated how big these inline sixes are, it was a bit of a pain in the *** to pull out of the bay. Put the engine on a stand and began pulling off as much as I could. I can't believe the amount of sludge build up that's in this thing!

Sludge is the word. There sure is a lot of crud in that motor. Have you decided to stick with the straight six?

Yeah I decided I'm going to stick with the inline

Continued pulling the motor apart today, hoping I can keep up the fast pace and get this thing done!

Ford ran that motor longer than any other. Not to mention it was used in multiple industrial applications. The 300 inline 6 is as tough as they come.

Look into some of the power mods available for it.

You are definitely tearing into that motor pretty quickly. What do the cylinder walls look like? Was there an estimate on the amount of miles the motor had?

Definitely looking into adding some power just not sure exactly what I'm going to do to it yet.

The cylinder walls look to be in good shape. Ran my finger across the them and can't feel any marks. According to the ODO it had 100k on it, and I don't think it rolled over because it's been sitting the past 20yrs.
