Good resource! We can use that as our guide. Want to do it on Saturday?

Yes, we should plan on that.

I rounded up the dizzy and the recurve kit I bought. I put it all together in a box with the other parts. I have a way of putting things up so they wont get lost. Then I forget where I put them and they get lost.

The dizzy was gone forever this morning, but then noticed I put it by the cam kit right before I gave up the search. (remember the reamer box story?)

Now it is all on my desk. So remind me I made a note of this before I come out Saturday.

I have a giant bag of grade #8, 1/2 inch bolts in various lengths, nuts , flat washers and lock washers along with a giant zip lock of 1/4 inch bolts that has the same contents as the 1/2 inch stuff. I just saw them like 2 weeks ago at the shop. To make a long story short I just had to buy 4,grade #8, 1/2" bolts, nuts, flat washers and lock washers to put my pintle hook hitch together Friday.

For real, go to link of the actual thread on the foureyepride forum (I posted a link) and read the posts that discuss it as well.

Lol! Yes, I was thinking of the reamers as I was reading that.

Ok, we are set for Sat. But, could you take my ZF5 to James? He's going to take it to Scotty. But, I need to order in the shifter kit, and maybe the rebuild kit - I need to talk to him about that. Anyway, if he's not home when I get there I wouldn't have a way of unloading it by myself. So, if we load it and you & he unload it?

Ok, so I headed out to Gary's Garagemahal at the crack of 8:37 AM. I had my box of goodies in tow:

contents of the box included a gently used DSII distributor that I acquired from Gary's Used Truck Parts Emporium, A SMP pick up coil (part #LX204T) to replace the OEM unit that had a broken plug, a SMP adjustable vacuum advance canister (part#VC192) and the Crane Cams adjustable vacuum advance canister that came with recalibration springs for the inside of the dizzy (part # 99607-1).

Here is a pic (from left to right) of the Crane cams, SMP and Ford OEM vacuum canisters:

Notice that for whatever reason the Crane unit is a behemoth! The OEM unit's actuating arm was stamped with a "6". The SMP unit was stamped with a "12". The SMP unit had twice the adjustment that the OEM unit had and the Crane had the same as the OEM. It's arm was stamped with a "C" I assuming for cool.

Well, it looks like the programmers are working on the code. Recently IE didn't work for uploading pics, but Chrome did. Now Chrome isn't working as I uploaded three pics and only one appears - in spite of the two that don't show having shown before "inserting". Oh well, maybe they'll get it fixed and they'll show later.

This shows the "soft stop" that Bill spoke of. We took it off in the recurve of the dizzy.

This shows the springs before swapping - one light and one heavy.

And this shows the springs after swapping - the factory light spring and Crane's silver spring. This should give 30 degrees of centrifugal advance by 3,500 RPM.

Being male, Gary and I jumped right into the disassembly totally disregarding the two sets of disassembly destructions we had on hand as well as the multiple links with pics showing how it is done:

Here we are meticulously working on this tiny wire outside snap ring for 30 frustrating minutes of our short lives which turned out didnt need to come off at all. However, we stayed the course and got it removed!

The reason the Crane unit is so large is that it has both advance and retard capabilities built in. That's why it has two vacuum ports. Here are the measurements we took on them:

Crane: Advance movement = .115" Retard movement = .085"
SMP: Advance movement = .220"
Ford: Advance movement = .115"

And, we played with the SMP unit to see how much change the screw made. With it all the way screwed in (clockwise) it started moving at 3" of vacuum, and finished movement at 10" of vacuum. With it turned the max of 13 turns counter-clockwise, it started moving at 8" and was fully "in" at 16".

So, how does that work? Here's the factory unit disassembled (#ilovemylathe):

Here's the adjuster. Note the hex in the center that takes the Allen wrench. Fortunately, they saw fit to make the face of that screw large so there's no chance of the Allen wrench getting by the screw and into the diaphragm - as I'd always wondered.

This shows the designation on the arm of "6", which I think means it provides 6 degrees of advance at the distributor, or 12 degrees at the crank.

And, here's what prevents it from providing more advance - the width of the slot.

What slot are you using?
Did you mark the reluctor before you pried it off?
