Hello all! I recently traded my lil Saturn for my brothers 87' F150, 2WD, 5.0L V8, 3 Spd Auto. The problem is beyond my knowledge. The truck isn't getting any power at all, to anything in the rear (Taillights, Brake Lights, or Reverse lights). We checked all the fuses and there all good. The headlights and front turn signals work and blink at normal interval. They don't blink fast like there is a problem.
The brake switch is getting power and my test light showed it had power when the brake pedal was activated.
None of the wires are getting power on the frame anywhere. So i thought the problem would be under the dash, but there are wires everywhere.
On top of that, the Ignition switch on the back of the steering column broke so we replaced it and now the truck goes into the "run" position and everything comes on, but it wont start. If i take a screwdriver to the Pos/S terminals on the Solenoid it starts up and stays running, and shuts down like its supposed too. I'm confused on why it wont do it from the column.
Any and all help on either subject would be much appreciated.
Still havent found an answer? ive messed with it all agin and again... both sides of the brake switch are active with the brake pedal untouched. Input and output of the brake switch are making my test light light up, without pressing the brake pedal. Im lost on what is happening? Is it suposed to be like that or not?
If I remember correctly there is a long rod that runs down the steering column to activate the actual physical switch which is located also attached to the steering column. The switch itself adjusts up and down. You have to kind of monkey with it but you can get it set in the right location to get the starter working.
As an aside you now know how to steal pretty much every late 80's Ford pickup. The gear shift lock mechanism is easily broken (don't ask me how I know this).
Yah i found that haha and we just replaced that switch down the back of the steering column 4 weeks ago, and it was starting. I did find out that the red wire going to the S terminal of the solenoid was green and burnt, so i ran a new wire and it starts right up now.
Just cant figure out the lights. Cant drive it with no brake lights.
I changed the lock cylinder in my older truck but I don't remember exactly why I did it. I got real familiar with the steering column.
I do remember I had to pop the hinges with yet a new tool, get a steering wheel puller which was yet another new tool, and do some other odd nonsense to the steering column. Thanks to an ebay cheap tool importer for not putting me in the poor house to get the tools I needed. NAPA actually had in stock the tilt column gearshift lock bar in their "really weird stuff shrink wrapped to cardboard" area.
I still don't remember why I had to tear the column apart but I was eventually able to getting working again.
Don't forget the little cable that drives the P R N D 1 2 3 indicator.
I do remember impressing the heck out of an old guy (being myself a younger guy at the time) by starting the truck with a screwdriver. Until I fixed the main problem I had one of those "squeeze the trigger" auto shop manual starter thingies hanging out of the front of the truck. That way I could start it without opening the hood. I'd turn the key on, then jump out and squeeze the trigger to start it.
Proved embarrassing enough to eventually fix it. Of course that truck blew it's tranny shortly after that and I just junked it.
